Why Authenticity is Vital in Business | Episode 19 | Infinity Effect

– Fake until you make it doesn’t mean that you’re not genuine. It doesn’t mean that you
have been this fake person. It’s actually being the person
that you want to always be, visualizing it and embodying that today, so that in the future you’ll become that. (upbeat music) Okay, so I’m here at LAX
Airport about to fly out, walking around, people are looking at me really, really weirdly. I’m talking to the phone and
people are looking and going, what the hell are you doing? But in LA that’s quite normal so, they’re not gonna think I’m crazy. We’re talking about fake
it till you make it. This city runs really, really
differently because of, you know, this notion. It has this notion about, you
know, always wanting more, always wanting to achieve better, always wanting to go to that next level. It reminds me of an event
that happened in my life. And this is back when I was probably or good 15 years ago now. I was working at the NAB and I was trying to apply for IT in leader position. And at the time I was just in IT support, I was doing a basic job, but my wife pushed me and she said, listen, why don’t you go for it? But I said to her, but I don’t
have any managerial skills. You need to embody, you
need to really think about, it’s kind of like visualizing
yourself in the future, of being that person right now. If you actually do those type
of activities in your life, and do visualize yourself in the future, then you’ll achieve something great. In the end, I actually got the job. – It’s almost natural to assume
that there will be a period of time in anything when
we’re learning anything when we are we gonna have to fake it. Particularly, I’ll say this, particularly when you’re
in a role of leadership. Okay? (laughing) I’m just going to call it for what it is. Like anyone who who runs a team anywhere in the world will know what
I’m talking about here. Alright? Which is when people are relying
on you to have the answers to the questions that they have, they look to the leader and just assume that the leader knows. I had a chat to a senior
leader of an organization and he said to me, for
the longest period of time I was waiting for somebody to figure out that I didn’t know what I was doing. (laughing) And then I realized that
we’re all making our jobs up. (laughing) And I was just like, you
couldn’t have said it better (laughing) – In particular when I started speaking and presenting from stage
and speaking from stage, I used to, you know, try and be something that I wasn’t from stage
when I was learning or trying to develop my skill set and I remember being taught, look, just pretend to be
something that you’re not. Fake it till you make it. And then people will like
you and people will buy from you and people will wanna be around you and all that sort of stuff. – People do get caught up on the notion that there’s a level of
inauthenticity around the approach. And so if they enter
into the act of faking it in order to make it, if they do make it, it’s not sustainable. – Yeah man. We’re already in sync straight away, bang! (laughing) – But it’s not sustainable
because what it took to get there isn’t a
reflection of who you truly are and therefore, when you
arrive there, you’re like, how do I keep on being
this thing that I’m not? – Because it’s not really you, it becomes a massive
challenge for you to maintain and sustain that level of enthusiasm or whatever it may be intended
to be smarter than what you really are, or wiser
or having knowledge on a topic that you don’t
really have knowledge on. All of which I’m sure we’ve all done and I can put my hand up
and say, you know what, I’ve done that in the past. – You’re talking about leadership and potentially the leadership of a team, my instant take on it is parenthood. You know, your child comes
to you and says, daddy, how do you do this? Or I wanna know about
this, can you tell me? And it’s like, right. Yes, my child. (laughing) My child is looking at me going, I should have the answer here. – Let’s ask Google honey. – Yeah, yeah and it’s very much there. And this will be my older
daughter, she’s now nine, she can pick it. As soon as she sees me trying to make something up she goes, don’t worry, I’ll go ask mommy. (laughing) – Kids are smart these days– – Kids are smart man, you know they can just read through you. – It’s a flawed logic
to think if you show up and pretend to be something
that you won’t be found out. Okay? So I wanna take you into the next level, which is be it till you see it, right? Which is really about adopting
the attitudes from behaviors, adopting the mindset and practices and disciplines that are required to see a thing through to completion. – There are always situations that we face on a day-to-day as we up
level, as we progress from, I know what I’m doing to, I
don’t know what I’m doing. That requires us to still our minds, still our bodies get
focused, become intentional and work our way through those things to achieve the outcome. – Yeah, it’s interesting
with us as a business. So when we moved and we
started like 15 months ago now, and it’s amazing what we’ve
actually achieved over that period of time. And we have actually, we’re in a business that is really based around trust, it’s based around experience, it’s based around longevity
and yet we’ve achieved so much off the back of
being the people who we are. – Because it’s in that consistency, it’s in being the thing
that the goal is achieved. – It takes confidence
or at least a little bit of self-belief to be that. Be that person as opposed
to faking it till making it. – When you’re yourself and who you are and you talk about stuff
that you truly know, within you, not pretend to
know, but you truly know, you’ll have a lot more certainty and a lot more self-belief
in who you are as a person and people will honestly,
genuinely resonate with that. – People feel our energy,
they feel our enthusiasm, they feel our passion. It really is so much more than just faking it till you make it. It is about being consistently
the person who aspires to more and disciplines one-self. Until eventually the
environment catches up and delude this as a success that we always knew was ours to claim. (upbeat music)
