You have been listening to “Three Mile
Island: As It Happened” a series of three podcasts chronicling the events of the
worst nuclear accident in US history. At 7 a.m. a site emergency is
declared this triggers the plant’s general emergency declaration at 7:24
a.m. and at 9:06 a.m. The Associated Press files its first story the story
goes on to say med ed officials have requested a state police helicopter
officials at Med Ed the company that owns the plant request request.
Yeah just say view requests instead of that yeah all right initially the
culprit is a pump that sends water to the reactor steam generators it
malfunctions though, automatically shutting the reactor down that triggers a relief
valve you know like a pressure relief valve and we can even say pressure
relief valve let’s see it emerges Or just pressurizer, that’s how they refer to it. it happened near Harrisburg on March
28, 1979. I’m your host Tim Lambert this is part of a collaboration between
PA Post, WITF and PennLive marking the 40th anniversary of the accident.
