Surviving Cancel Culture: 2 Things to Never Say and 3 Things to Do

Good Morning! So I wanted to briefly
address the latest controversy in the “Cancel Culture”! So SNL hired for the
first time Bowen Yang, the first time in 46 54 some ridiculous amount of years
and seasons ever the first ever Asian cast member for the upcoming season. They
also hired this guy named Shane Gillis who’s a comedian and the problem with
Shane is about a couple of years ago on to some podcast that he had, some sort of secret podcas,t he made some quite racially disparaging words and used some terminology that are just racist! He referenced Asian people as
“chinks” I mean don’t like using the word myself and then he also called gay people “fags”
and which is a word also I really just tried to avoid just generally but just
in context explaining what was said now since then he’s gotten fired. Now what
happened when he got fired, he used the standard in “cancel culture”
standard “non apology “and so let me go back a little bit talk about “Cancel Culture” essentially we’re in a generation era where some announcement can be some
new person. a new job. a new gig, usually it’s ab=n
on-air personality or some sort of television or media personality or actor
or something in some big role so what happens is people research them and they
see what they’ve done in the past and then they you know and they dig up a lot
of times they find something and then and they’ll say ok we can’t have this or
it could be someone who’s already established it does something and they
do something so outrageous it offends the sensibilities a lot of people and
Twitter and social media and there’s a lot of campaign and people are
threatening boycott and eventually based on what this person does they’re “canceled”
so let’s talk about some famous people who were canceled in history who I
don’t think necessarily should have been canceled. Sinead O’Conner, because she criticized the Pope she tore up a picture of the Pope
during a performance at SNL and you couldn’t criticize the
Catholic Church. Nowadays, everyone does it for sport. I think the “Dixie Chicks”
During Bush’s era criticized their the America’s war in Iran (actually Irw) and called it BS
or something so they were canceled Chrisette Michelle, you know I loved her
music, I loved her you know, her career wasn’t on the rise when she did this but
she decided to perform at Trump was very controversial character
especially amongst the black community she’s performed his inauguration
she got Canceled. There’s a few people that I think shouldn’t have gotten canceled. Some folks who got canceled and came back Brian Williams, journalist, Marv Albert, then there are some folks who just can’t get canceled no matter what they do:
Kanye West, he just survives it, no matter how many things he does that’s crazy he
survives cancellation. Donald Trump is another example he says lots and lots of
crazy stuff but he’s still gonna have supporters no matter what so um you know
that’s cancel culture when people just like you’re done R Kelly
Bill Cosby, the Me Too Era of canceled people include Kevin Spacey, R Kelly, Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, folks are not they shouldn’t come back from their
major public, criminal activities and then there’s the racial based ones
Paula Deen, Roseanne Barr I guess the Richards Keith Richards
fun-sized from Seinfeld so here’s what you do if you are found to
do if you find yourself in a situation where you are and in a media firestorm
and on the verge of getting fired, lose some sort of opportunity that you had at
your grasp before people in internet went crazy and found whatever a crazy
thing that you did for racist or sexist or crazy offensive thing, First thing you
do is you do not use the words say” if I offended anyone.” Well the fact that you’re
in this piece of mess now means that you definitely offended people so don’t ever
use those terms “if I have offended anyone.” The second thing you want to voice, say “my intention” or talk about what what you wanted to do what were your intent and “I
would never…” We already whether irrespective of your
intent, no one cares at this point whether you whether it was in your heart
or what you want intended, because it’s it’s done so mentioning your intention is
really just irrelevant. The Only two things your apology should include actually
should have three elements the first thing is acknowledge the pain and hurt
to whatever group it is that was hurt so that’s it, you know, you know, acknowledge
the history mention you know by now yours crisis management team would’ve said, ok
this is the context, these are the things or historical reason why this term or
“mention of the word ‘tar-baby.” or whatever is offensive if you don’t know you know so
the second thing after you do is acknowledge the pain and hurt, the next
you do is you own up and say well my Choice of words at the time were poorly
chosen or they reflected some immaturity if it’s something that was happening
like a lot of times these you know these internet stars or people on Twitter
they just try to be cool and say all sorts of stuff when they were younger
and then they grow up and they get big and they get popular and then people say
yeah but when you were 20 you said this you can say what that statements I made
reflect my immaturity so I’ve grown people respect growth and everyone
because everyone makes mistakes and everyone grows so acknowledging and own
up to what you, everyone acknowledges that people grow, so people respect
growth and and you know people can put themselves in a situation not always cuz
I a lot of times people just get “holier than thou” and they have expectations for
people in public office or position than they have for themselves and that’s just
part of the the burden or part of the you know the the the the duty
responsibilities of it being in the high profile position is that you’re gonna be
held to higher standard than normal people and people hold for themselves and the
last thing you need to do is just announce what you’re going to do in the
future to better educate yourself to grow ‘so I’m gonna learn from this… I’m
going to take this information and reach out” I’m going to a lot of times people
will go into some sort of therapy or they’ll announce that they’re taking I
don’t if it’s a sex addition addiction addiction clinic or they’re gonna check
themselves into something so they’ll do something and tell people what you’re
gonna do to learn from the error and that’s it those are the four elements to
survive a crisis that’s it so you can survive a cancel culture and then also
don’t ever compare yourself to someone who has survived it better so some
people say well for in terms of for the um the Willis Gillis guy Shane Gillis is
that well Dave Chappelle says nah blah blah but he’s not Dave Chappelle, you’re
an up-and-coming, your rising and you’re held to a different standard! Donald Trump
says a lot of things that are offensive to a lot of people but I dare say you go
your HR office or go into your work and repeat some of the stuff that Donald
Trump has said to and about different people and you’ll find yourself out of a
job so don’t compare yourself to someone else and you know and say well and also
I’ve see people saying well, they shouldn’t be offended. You cannot control
how someone receives that, especially if you’re not in that group and the biggest offenders
who are always telling people they shouldn’t be offended is usually like White Men or White people. You you guys are always in a, you’re never gonna feel the same kind of pain and the effects of racism is never gonna be as hard on you!
He lost his job but he still has lots of Opp…and he still gets to navigate the
world for the most part the world of caters to him so even if he moves to
Africa or moves to Ireland or changes jobs it’s just he’s still
gonna have you know the basic privileges to come from being a white male so I
mean that’s just one particular incidence but um yeah that’s it I hope
that was helpful peace! Bye! This is JJ Ghatt! Subscribe to my channel if you’re
watching this on YouTube otherwise just you know see you around
