revolutionary Auto Sales podcast I’m swanny this James and I’m Clint
welcome to show Clint thanks so uh we’ve decided to make some adjustments to the
podcast nope Clint we’re gonna try and maintain your energy and bring you on
every week ooh I’m really sorry thank you guys your
business yeah that’s fair but I’m really started to youtube and to the audience
that you have to deal with me but what what sparked this James we had a big old
marketing meeting lots of markers a whiteboard well what’s going on okay so
first of all we we started this this podcast II almost a year ago and there’s
mostly you and I and you were the one that was really excited about it you
wanted to do it I said great let’s do it and you know so I would I think it’s
fair to say we took it seriously but we didn’t put forth a ton of money behind
it or a ton of energy but we I mean we are fairly consistent and I felt like
that actually kind of how I feel about most of our marketing you know we we had
an Instagram you know a year ago we had you know Facebook you know Google
ratings things like that and so but we kind of got kind of lacks about it I
mean in a very similar manner where you know we’re trying to do this every week
it got to a point we’re doing it every other week every three weeks and just
kind of got to the point where we weren’t doing it consistently and I
kinda feel like that’s how I felt towards our marketing we used in the
past we’ve done a lot of videos with Clint on Facebook and myself as well
anyways so we get a phone call and Clinton gets the phone call and of
course he doesn’t want to deal with it so he says call right back and James
will answer so I called back an answer and so it’s my defense they said is
James Norman available so it’s kind of a recurring never and if if the person’s
asking for James then yes but if somebody calls in it says is Clint there
James cannot hand that phone to me fast enough
so you know so anyway so he calls back and and she works for GoDaddy
hoo-wee you know who’s hosting our website and she’s like oh I’m part of
the social media marketing team but can I have like two seconds of your time
and I was like sure basically she she got me to go on and join me and she gave
me a little she pulled up our Google’s rating she pulled up our Instagram she
pulled up cool things and she basically trashed it it was like look she’s like
so what’s your strategy on it just like the hurt her approach worked me so bad I
just I hated the way she approached me on it like and in fairness part of the
reason I hated it because it’s true I don’t love everything that we’re doing
marketing wise and she was and she’s came out super abrasive I even said look
you’re calling me out of the blue and you’re basically thrashing me I don’t I
don’t love this shit well I’m just so passionate about it on my nameís so then
she pulls up like all the different because we’re on a State State Street in
Lindon Utah which goes into Orem there’s a lot of car dealerships and there’s
probably 20 to 30 car dealerships on the in a two mile three-mile stretch and so
it’s and that’s right where we are she’s like what are you guys doing to
differentiate yourself and oh whatever I was so annoyed you got you guys saw me I
was just so annoyed talking this girl anyways long story short we get we end
the phone call and I’m just super annoyed I put on my headphones for a
minute and then I walked out of the room yeah well you should have said like we
put balloons on our antennas or we put banners like something and she’s not
wrong so in her defense she’s not wrong I hated her approach I hated her pitch
is horrible she wasn’t wrong and that’s what really
really irked me and so we kind of got together we said look we want to kind of
recommit to some of those things we’ve done in the past but also maybe take
things a step further and so we decided hey why don’t we film this
why don’t we film our podcast we put on YouTube we can do snippet snippets of it
on Instagram or Facebook but but ultimately we can take it more seriously
yeah and that’s and that’s ultimately what we wanted to do and so that’s why
we’re here and so I forget I don’t know this girl’s name at GoDaddy she’s so she
kind of reinvigorated us and we’re gonna take more seriously I mean oh thank you
whoever you are to whatever her name is you know and so with that being said you
know I appreciate the phone call and what she’s doing and
we want to be better right so let’s get into then the first segments are good
and bad text okay so I’ve actually this was this is this I’m gonna say it this
may be my favorite way someone has ever asked me for a discount so this is a
good text oh my gosh that’s exceptional and I was telling you about it earlier
yesterday when we were getting ready for the podcast is the kid that asked me he
was he had already came in sorry I already had interaction to him so I
already knew the kind of person he was so when he responded in a certain way I
knew it was genuine instead of sometimes you read a text or an email and you give
him a horrible tone or you know you interpret it yeah maybe in a way they
didn’t mean it so I knew this kid was just like saw the
earth but so he said hey goes hey your blue Hyundai is there any way you’d be
willing to come down in price if not I totally understand I’m still weighing my
options okay that’s a fairly generic most people do something like that like
hey can you come down in price right and I said yes I’m willing to come down I
don’t have a ton of money in it but I’m willing to discount it what were you
thinking okay so here’s where I feel like he just hit a homerun on me so we
it was online for 14 grand and here’s what he says he says 12 or 13 K question
mark you know how you get that question in a job interview of how much do you
want to make but you don’t want to sound crazy I don’t want to sound crazy at all
what would be fair to you and I’m really glad you’re willing to work with me what
are you thinking I loved it like I like the way I just
like dude and I said so here’s what I responded that might be the nicest /
best way someone has ever asked for a discount it makes me want to help you
you and your wife out I could discounted a thousand bucks I’d be willing to sell
for 12 995 I think that’s fair for both of us what do you think he said you have
a deal I’ll be down later today awesome Jesus taught and I just love that he was
like he was willing to acknowledge look I don’t know if I’m crazy because I mean
we get people that are like they ask for discounts you’re like I don’t even want
to help you you know or even respond yeah yeah so he was a stud so on the
reverse side of that and I know I’ve said this before but this is my least
favorite way someone asks for a discount and the guy said over the phone so it’s
not quite a text but it’s conversation so
long story short he has a trade-in for about ten grand our vehicle is about 23
grand the difference is 11,000 okay so he has you don’t have a pay off so he’s
it’s an $11,000 difference about that and what he says is he says hey are you
willing to get down to 10 grand difference that’s what I’m approved for
okay I said he works keyword the worst part of that is the approved form yeah
and I get that this is how he feels comfortable asking for a discount I can
say this a hundred times in my mind I can say that loud I get this what he’s
doing it bugs me so bad because the first thing I say is look you’re putting
down 11 grand I am sure I can I’m certain I can get you per for more money
eight years in the industry working with banks this is this is a layout you
understand I’m like I can you can get approved for 25 grand on this vehicle
and I’m like so would you like me to get see if and get you more approved or is
this just actually what you feel comfortable paint and he’s like this is
this is my budget I want to be at 10 grand which I totally get and in all
fairness he was you know he really was just like yeah that’s that’s what my
budget is and we actually end up making making the deal
and he we settled at ten five but I think for the people for customers
listening is like you truly do if you really do want a discount it doesn’t
matter how you ask like there are certain times I know people ask for
discount it bugs me the way they asked I don’t want help
you know I mean so mm-hmm there’s kind of two different kind of extremes of
both ways but okay good good interactions I like it yep
what’d you fill us in on what’s been going on this last week in the
dealership it’s the other day I literally do not know what you’re
talking about and we prepped for this bar well in case you didn’t notice we do
have a fly problem is that what we’re getting at that’s not okay I’m talking
about cuz I want to talk about my artistic ability my degree from college
being put Oh Swan e’s been playing the bagpipes a lot more often this week it’s
been really awesome okay okay I obviously have no clue
going with this so I’m just gonna listen and then Clint’s been spearheading our
new website how did that come about by the way cuz this is something we’ve been
talked to be talking about there’s six months in and Clint’s been saying we
need a website how tell us how you’ve been going about trying to get a website
and well I’ve had a couple of friends start to build me a website and bless
their hearts it’s it’s a lot more money than then yeah I bounce it off James and
it’s gonna be two thousand dollars and he’s like no we’re not spending two
grand on a website that’s one side of it first of all quit clinton is like he has
a lot of people that want to help him like he really doesn’t mean people are
like will come do this will come down so i his his friends and family are
incredible but to their credit they’re like Clint we want to make you a website
but they want to build it from the ground scratch like straight up blank
start here’s how we’re gonna do it and it’s just like and he’s right he’s like
dudes I can make to kinda like I’m sorry no we don’t need a website for well I’m
like and like three months ago I had a friend say hey I know she’ll have a
website you should use this you know such and such company Mars for sale
cars for sell and they’re really easy to work with and I just tuck that back in
my brain and you didn’t even tell James didn’t even bring it up because mainly
because he just didn’t think that a website was the way for and we’ve said
on the podcast James and I are both like I don’t know that the website is
actually gonna drive people in say hey can I look at your website once what you
have well the funnest part is when anytime we work with a social media
platform or company or anybody and or CarGurus calls or anybody calls and
they’re and they’re like hey we can integrate this through your website or
we can integrate that very upset we’re like we don’t have a website and they
they like pause for 30 seconds they’re like you don’t have a website and we
straight up like how people buy cars yeah and obviously to our credit that’s
not how people buy cars we yeah we’re still selling cars yeah now we
understand there’s there’s market there we understand we need to do it yes yes
but for a startup company whose money’s tight castle’s an issue to spend two
grand on a website I’m sorry that didn’t make sense yeah so
how did I even get the call though I don’t remember like I don’t know but so
what happens is one of my friends who’s in the business he starts saying
something about websites I’m like I do we don’t have Wayne is like oh we used
cars for sale and it’s like 99 bucks a month and they have templates that you
use and they’re incredible they’re awesome he’s like you got to reach out
to him so I reach out to him I tell clay like bro cars for seismic dude someone
just told me that of course he doesn’t ring up to me yeah well I didn’t know my
friend that told me didn’t tell me it was that reasonable he was just like oh
this is and I thought to myself dude if it’s like you know it’s I didn’t think
of it as being like something really good or really cool just like some you
know web page thing and I didn’t picture it as being like a a well done thing I
would say it’s the best web site but it’s functional
it works art magic it’s exactly what we need for 99 bucks a month this is steel
so it’s actually it’s revolutionary auto sales calm revolutionary Auto was taken
bug stupid idiots that don’t even use in auto sells calm and there’s a big
picture on the front and that’s what someone he’s talking about oh yeah so
money has a photography degree and he hasn’t even so we so we have we have the
most beautiful beautiful view from the mountains you sit at the base of this
beautiful mountain range and it’s it seriously is breathtaking I mean we get
comments on every time so I mean I grew up in Utah and it’s still breathtaking
so suwanee took a picture and it’s and that’s what our website is so if you
guys go to the website at sejuani’s beautiful photographer work it’s
gorgeous picture and so that and so I mean that even ties in to what we just
had previously mentioned with the the gal that calls us right like it’s taken
us six months to get a website now we understand you don’t have that website
to sell cars we understand the other so have social media sell cars you
certainly don’t have a podcast to sell cars but it’s just another example of
are you taking it seriously are you doing these things you know and I told
you I said these are long-term benefits right this podcast isn’t gonna sell a
car today I’m gonna sell the car in the next month
could it sell a car in a year from now in two years no absolutely
you know bringing people’s awareness and you know for whatever how are you get
there you know we understand how those things works and so we haven’t taken it
super seriously but this is our one you know new commitment that we’re gonna you
want to do some live stuff one do you know some video stuff so yeah so and
we’ll be doing it together moving forward so all three of us will be here
I’m trying to keep a calm demeanor and not be my psycho self so hopefully you
guys can appreciate that there’s gotta be a way we can pull out the Clint
personality and still without it being overboard like well it had it be
productive and like personal like professional yes focus professional
whatever yeah all right the main topic this month or this week how do I know if
I’m getting a good deal Oh so Clint what you have to get I know I
get this question like anytime someone’s talking about cars they wanna know if
they got a good deal so I won’t hear from both of you on what your opinions
are but absolutely maybe whoever got an idea first how does a customer know if
they’re getting the best deal like we can look at like say best deal on what
are you and you do well well my firt my first thought is a good deal is all in
the eye of the beholder III I mean the first thing that came to my mind was
well do you think it’s a good deal right because that these are depreciating
assets right so they’re they’re they’re losing value a good deal looks different
and everybody right like I could pull an invoice out of the drawer and say I’m
giving you this car at what I paid for it well what if I paid more for it than
I should have paid for it so they’re not getting the best deal on
that case right because I overpaid and a good deal to some people is like how
much are you losing on the transaction so a good deal could be whatever they
perceive a good deal being right that’s kind of my first thought well not only
what they what they think but also on a used vehicle condition is a huge factor
in what the value of the vehicle is so I mean you could have the same make and
model same year same miles but the car could be one could be beat up one could
be makin and so but I also think what matters is
do you care you know some people might be buying the vehicle be like you know
I’m gonna beat the crap out of this truck I don’t care if it’s in mint
condition I don’t want it to be I just want the lowest price so then paying two
thousand dollars less they might feel ecstatic about that but there could be
someone that comes in that are like I need mint I want it to be pristine I
don’t want there to be a scratch on it and they come in and they’re like man
even for $2,000 less than I’m willing to pay this it wouldn’t be a good deal for
me this would make me happy you know it’s not what I want yeah so you know a
lot of people ask me that when I when I think of it when someone says do I get a
good deal the first thing is well what is the market telling you it’s not what
I say I don’t have this I’m not as master of cars the markets the only
thing that matters so a super simple way to know if you’re getting a good deal
just do a little bit research we’ve talked about research in the past go
online go to CarGurus go to cars comm go to auto trade I don’t care where you go
go find 10 vehicles they’re all similar year making miles for what you’re
looking for and do an average where where are they coming at that that’s how
you’re gonna know and then know that condition plays a role in this so your
your main unused you’re saying the main way I guess to know if you’re getting
good deal is comparing it to the market understanding that condition will vary
that price absolutely yeah yeah that price isn’t the only determining factor
in the decision making process so how about how about a new car where they
should all be in the same condition right so how do you know I mean I don’t
know if the question is how do I know if I’m paying the least amount I don’t know
if that necessarily means that that’s the best deal what are your thoughts on
that is it on a new cars always the lowest price is the best deal uh
possibly but not necessarily so here’s what I mean here’s my one thing about
now honestly I think the variance you know of getting a good deal versus a bad
deal is miniscule it’s almost isn’t I feel like it’s also a price driven you
might begin 500 bucks to a thousand dollars better at the most compared to
what else is out there in the market so I mean like if you’re gonna go buy a
Honda and let’s say you can go buy a brand new Honda Pilot I don’t feel like
going to three different dealerships you’re gonna get much better than maybe
500 bucks it’s really I truly don’t and in some cases maybe not even that so
I think when it comes to new new is pretty straightforward and if you hear
something gimmicky on the radio it’s like a key buy one car get one free yeah
buy one car yeah well you hear the term you know if it sounds too good to be
true it is that’s that’s the thing and everybody says you know I don’t I don’t
like the gimmicks I think it’s such bull like all these places saying they’re
gonna do this and do this and do this and do this and then sometimes that
exact person who said that goes and does that thing and and ends up getting you
know roped into it and I can tell you when that’s happened and I’ve had it
I’ve had happened to friends of mine they gave me their purchase contract and
I’m like yeah everything they said didn’t convert to this like you overpaid
or they gave you $0 for your trade based on what it should have been worth and at
that point I can’t just be like I told you so you know they pull out the car
they own it so I’m gonna I’m gonna kind of be like you know what whatever right
right yeah break too soft because the the gimmicks still work and are still
extremely effective I think from like my observation I see a lot of those type of
things where there’s like you know they might be offering something insane but
there’s always like the details right like what you have to do or maybe like
they can opt out of it if you don’t come complete certain things you know I have
a I have a warranty on my wife’s wedding ring but if it’s not Jenn tongue yeah it
has to go in for inspection and be checked off by the jeweler every six
months and I mean I can lapse on that by a day and I’m sure that they could
always just kick it no you didn’t comply so I feel like there’s lots of like
little things like that but at the same time so that’s kind of like all the
gimmicky stuff you know we might here as advertising and things where it’s like
four or five six thousand dollars difference in a competitor yeah which we
feel like makes no sense having been in the new car industry that those markups
don’t exist on your average vehicle right but I do remember once I I think
you were at the store at that time you’re putting really
tough situation and I remember driving past on my way up to the other
dealership down the road that I was working at and it was like get this
truck for $10,000 off and if I’m right you guys were just taking a huge hit and
loss on that because of the situation you’re in was that right okay so that
brings up a good point sometimes in that specific case what I’m
saying is maybe things like that do exist we were still making money on that
$10,000 off yeah yeah yeah and your financing and holding rate getting back
in from it we’re gonna make money on so one of the things you’re gonna run into
is anytime a new car dealer is trying to hit a goal or sell more than basically
they should I mean essential that’s what you’re
saying you want to be above market you want to be outperforming they have to
have marketing that draws in people that aren’t in the market okay
so you’re pulling some of this like I don’t need a new car but if that’s real
I’m gonna go do that so you’re pulling these people into your dealership and
then you’re just trying to you’re doing whatever you can say spinning however
you want to try to make car deals so when you see that that could mean like
switching him to a different car it could be selling back and product making
up the money in another way incorrect you you if you go into it okay this is a
better way of saying it if you hear something on the radio about a deal and
then you go into that dealership to find out about that deal you are not getting
a good deal I like that cuz that’s real okay the way
you get a good deal is the same way you get a good deal on used you go to four
biggest dealers in York State you see what they’re all pricing there’s out at
you know what the market is because you now know that you’re all similarly
priced you might get 500 hours better than that maybe a thousand on new car
because there’s a little bit more room in it but if you’re going in on a
gimmick you’re getting gimmicked period because that’s what they do yeah do I
like that don’t ever go in on a gimmick it’s not real no matter okay I like it
any last words on how you know if you’re getting a best deal none that come to
mind you gotta do research research spur the moment you don’t know cool well
