Podcasting Made Mobile – Your Podcast Travel Solution Including Skype / Phone Interviews

Hi, this is Aaron Weinbaum and welcome
to “Podcasting Made Mobile” You may remember me from last year’s popular
podcasting tutorial “Podcasting Made Simple” In fact, I have much of the same
setup here it is The Behringer q 802 USB look at that you know and I still have
it labeled so I don’t remember to put all my cords. The only thing I really did
differently is instead of the microphone box with the foam which I still have
right here which has a second microphone and I got a like an arm mount type deal
you know cuz I want to get fancy and and it it helps quite a bit. So there’s that. Anyway, back to the “Podcasting Made Mobile” Have you ever had a podcast
interview that you didn’t want to get away? But – you’re traveling? nobody wants
to travel with bulky podcasting equipment, especially microphones, mixers… I mean especially through the airport anyone that’s ever gone to the airport
with that stuff it’s a problem withTSA I had a problem recently just with a
freaking zoom h1 in a third-world country so I was held up – I almost was
late for my flight so this demonstration is for a Mac computer I’m sure you could
do this with a PC I just haven’t investigated how so full
disclosure – Spreaker has already laid out the roadmap on how to podcast mobily with the Skype and I will put a link in that in my
notes as well but I’m still gonna demonstrate how to record a Skype
interview on the road as well as a Wi-Fi call and a Google Hangouts call and what
I mean by a Wi-Fi call is with the Apple computer you can basically you it’s not
a handoff features with the iPhone you can look that up if you want you are
just using your carrier settings to make an actual
call from your computer So… with that, let’s go through the equipment before I get into the specific equipment let me recommend a backpack that will
make your life easier especially if you have a laptop you are traveling with. The
Swiss gear travel gear 1900 Scan Smart TSA laptop backpack you just flip the
bag open and your laptop and tablet stay secure without you having to take it out you just breeze right through security in the airport I’ve had one for years
and I’ve never had trouble with it We have a Jabra USB Voice 550 duo
corded headset So although I included the Amazon link
I found mine on eBay for $15 versus the $50 Amazon price so do your due
diligence Basically it is just it’s a headset with a microphone that plugs
in to your computer via the USB I also have the MacBook Pro as I mentioned I
have the Skype app for Mac Soundflower and last but not least Spreaker Studio
for Mac Quite honestly if you’re just starting out I would try to podcast like
this first Although my “Podcasting Made Simple” setup is easier than most it
still requires an investment. Now ultimately that is superior especially if you’re you’re doing a podcast with other callers because they can come in high they can come in low you can adjust the mixer but to get started it’s not top of the line but the mobile setup has a decent quality and minimal monetary investment I’m recording the remainder
of this tutorial actually via the mobile setup just to demonstrate
that it will sound okay Obviously you want to pick a quiet spot – The headset
I am using has good noise cancellation qualities even when I have to test
recordings in public okay I got it switched over hopefully you don’t notice
too much of a sound difference I’m just gonna go through these settings real
quick First of all you want to make sure you
have soundflower installed into your Mac and ready to go before you do this. Now to get to your sound settings you’re gonna want to hit the settings go click
on the sound and there you go Now first we’re going to go to the input for the
input you want the USB headset selected in my case it is the Jabra UC Voice next you want to go to the output right there to the left of the
input you want to select soundflower 2 channel 2 channel it’s just about does
anything you need to do in this particular setup Now, don’t panic that
you can’t hear anything if you’re listening to something that
you’re trying to record or you’re on the other end because the magic happens when
you go into your Spreaker screen your Spreaker studio screen You need to have
the following….. For the microphone and sources, you have actually two sources
coming in The Jabra in my case which is the USB headset That is one microphone The other microphone is actually your computer Now that sounds strange but it
is your computer because it is where the sound from the other end is coming
through – whoever it is you are talking to or if you’re wanting to play tracks Obviously obey all copyrights ! Any sound coming through to your computer is going
to go through soundflower Now, where the magic happens you want to click on the
headphone See how it’s bright yellow? for the Soundflower 2 channel Now your output is the Jabra UC Voice 5 5 0 a that’s where you will hear everything come through Now let’s go through a
recording demonstration What do you say we run through this real
quick? Alright so I did offline recording because I don’t want to broadcast it’s
kind of the cool thing about Spreaker – You can broadcast live to an audience all of this is involved in their plans You can actually use my promo code ASW get
30 days free let’s treat this like a little like an actual podcast for just a
second here so you can see this is like a mobile
mixer studio basically you can take it with you You got your soundboard here you can monitor your levels let’s do an intro (intro playing) “You’re listening to the one-man
show Network welcome to the Aaron Says What Podcast with your host Aaron
Weinbaum” (end intro) And that podcast is on aaronsayswhat.com which I won’t
include in the show notes Now let’s go through these calls real quick Let’s go
to the Skype firs. Now you want to make sure everything is set up to where your
input is the headset and the output is soundflower w
channel So let’s do a Skype test call (Skype voice) “Hello welcome to Skype call testing
service, please record a message afterwards your message will be played
back to you” (end Skype voice) Alright I can hear her she can hear me so that’s good I’m gonna
hang that up Now we’re going to go to the Google Same deal I’m just going to
call I’m gonna call 1-800 flowers How about that? Now I will show you the
settings has to be the same type of thing See look… input Jabra (1800 Flowers Voice Talking) Output Soundflower 2 channel Ok, I don’t want to accidentally order flowers Now to FaceTime, same deal, I’m going to call 1800 Flowers I don’t want to show all of my phone numbers obviously Let’s try that Boom! (1800 Flowers Voice Talking Again) (Still talking) Sweet, alright well I’m not going to do that (order flowers) Alright that’s it What do you say we wrap this up real quick? And that’s it! You are now podcasting on the run! Good Job! If you like what you see please
