Lisa Nichols – How To Manage a Job And Dream

Hi. Welcome back to the Lisa Nichols show
where we have carefrontational courageous conversations that grown folks
have about life transformation, about holding onto a new dream,
letting go of an old issue, holding onto a new possibility, letting
go to an old of an old relationship. Here we have conversations that
gladiators have giants have, Unicorns have real life people have about
what does it mean to every day strive to become the best version of
myself sometimes in spite of myself. So welcome. If it’s your first time
here, I hope that you find it a home. I hope that you find it like
so many others have thousands, hundreds of thousands of people
have found it as a safe space. This is your safe space I’ve created for
you the safe space I needed for myself. So welcome home. Today’s conversation is how do I have
a job and a dream and most importantly, how do I live my dream
while working a job? So many people come to me and say, Lisa, I have a day job and yet I have
this dream. I want to be a dancer. I want to be a singer. I want to
be a photographer. I want to be, I want to be a speaker. I want to be
an author. I want to be, I want to be, I want to be a dream. And you know, I love our parents. I
love our parents’ parents, but I don’t see a lot of space back in
the day to live your dream while working your job. Matter of fact, it
was taught be dutiful your job, stay there 25 years and be acknowledged.
And while that’s important, and if that’s your dream, then do that. If your dream is to be the most powerful, effective team member for an organization, then you are a brand within a brand
and make sure you do your part. Your role is 100% you. And so ownership is not always everything. Ownership of a business is not everything. We’re in this state where
entrepreneurial-ism is sexy. I remember 10 20 years ago you say you
want to be an entrepreneur. People said, oh, how incredibly lazy you just trying to
have a job where you work for yourself so you don’t have to really work. I was embarrassed to tell people I was
an entrepreneur 20 years ago that I wanted to leave my job because
jobs represent security
and I don’t encourage you if you have a dream to run off and leave
your job because you can’t dream when you’re worried about the light bill. You can’t dream when you
worried about the gas bill. You can’t dream when you worried
about your car note are your children. And so I believe that careers have a, a valuable, vital place. That’s how things run is
that people have careers. And so don’t feel like
there’s a this or that, a dream or a career. What about, uh, and if you have a dream
and you have a job, I think that’s amazing. All you need
to do is learn how to navigate both. You need to learn how to navigate your
job so that you do it with joy, grace, and gratitude that you overdeliver.
If you give your employer, or as I like to call it, your investor, why do I call your employer your
investor? Because your employer, your investor gives you the freedom
to invest in the things you love, gives you the freedom to invest in
vacation, gives you the freedom. So rename your job, your investor, because it’s through your investor that
you can do things and then know that if you give you investor just what
they asked for, that c level, you want to blow people’s mind. But you can only do that in a job if
you operate from a place of gratitude. Every day you go to your
job and you have that job, they’ve chosen you again and
everyday you go to that job, you’ve chosen them again.
Live with that fresh energy. Tweak the things that don’t work
for you. Set healthy boundaries, leave work at work, but get it done and then create a space
for your dream to stop being your dream and become your reality. See, people resent jobs when they feel like
their job has cost them their life. Your job didn’t cost you your life,
your job hired you to deliver a result, and that’s what you are charged
with doing. Outside of that, what’s your dream? Let’s have some dream time and
right after you have the dream, let’s have some strategy time. Let’s
write down the when the where, the by. When. Let’s write down the macro wins your big
goals and let’s write down your micro wins, your smaller goals
to get you to the dream. Let’s let them both coexist. We don’t live in either our world we
live in and with most importantly, let’s begin to invest in your dream. Let’s write your dream a check.
If you read my book abundance now, then you know that I wrote, I wrote my dream a check every two
weeks for three and a half years. If you haven’t picked it up, pick it
up. Not, I’m not trying to sell a book. I don’t have to do that. I just want
you to get the details of how I did it. I don’t have time to tell you here
everything, but in a nutshell, I wrote myself a check every
two weeks when I wrote, when I worked for La Unified
School district. I appreciate it. La Unified School district.
It was difficult. It was
challenging. I was young. I was a young mother. I had a big dream in my belly and I had
a big job I needed to do and I did them both every day. I worked my job from
nine to six every night. I literally wrote my time in
my top on my fake time card. I wrote my time in at six 30 every evening
and I worked from six 30 til about 10 30 1130 Jelani was right
there with me at my job. I stayed at my job. They let me stay
there in the evenings. No one really, you know, I was in this, this
old building that I worked in. Jelani would come. I had blankets
for him. I had food for him. I had toys for him and I made sure
he was comfortable. I was radical. I’m sure somebody judged me, but heck, somebody’s always going to talk about you. Talk about me while I’m building my dream. I wrote myself a check every two weeks,
every two weeks I wrote myself a check. And in the memo line I
put funding my dream. That’s why I call it your investor. Cause I wrote a check from
my payroll check to my dream. I let my payroll fund my dream. Come on.
You know, I don’t know if you hear me. I let my payroll fund my dream, which
is why I was excited to go to work, which is why I kept them very, very happy. I didn’t go to work with a resentful heart
as if they’re snatching my life away. And I invite you to go to work with a
joyful heart and then write your dream a check even before you
know what the dream is. If you know you have a dream
and it’s still getting clear, write yourself a check. Funding
my dream as I get clear. Put it in the bank account that you
don’t touch. And then every day. Do One more thing to make
your dream your reality. I’m your sister in this journey. I’m
honored to walk this path with you. I’m honored to help pose some questions
and poke some holes and agitate some souls and some energy and stir up some
things you hadn’t thought of before. I’m honored to do that. I’m also honored to remind you that you’re
in the exact right place at the exact right time, doing the exact right thing. Your life is a culmination of divine
appointments that led you right here. Why? Because this is your
home. We are your tribe, and I am your sister in
prosperity and in possibility. And when I say I believe
in you and I love you, I don’t say it for lack of
other words and things to say, I say it because I believe in you and I love you. I’ll see you next time.

  1. Omg LISA! Thank you! Are you speaking directly to me or what?! I was being extremely hard on myself today. Questioning why I have not accomplished my dreams when I legitimately FEEL my dreams shining through me. I felt so ashamed, so discouraged and even upset that I couldn't do anything but finish my shift at work with all the radiation of my dreams rushing through me….. So this video was beyond necessary and right on time!! I love the way you shifted my view from employer to investor. Like, wow! That alone just gave me so much motivation and a burst of energy that fills me with so much hope! Thank you today and I'm sure I'll be thanking you in the future! โค

  2. Thank you, Lisa! I've been so ready to be done with this chapter and soooo ready to move into the next chapter. Though not today , my time will come. Thank you for the reminder to think in terms of gratitude, produce my best results at my job, funding my dream, and do something everyday toward the dream becoming a reality.

In addition, thank you for sharing your story and closing with "love and your sister in possibility and prosperity". It positively fuels my spirit to know there is someone out there "that knows" and sends faith, love, and encouragement! I hope some day to shake your hand and share victory stories.

Thank you that you know, share, and invest. It makes a difference!

  3. Always with the right words. I was just talking to my coworker about this and boom Lisa confirmed it! I just love you Lisa!๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿฅฐ

  6. This was a great and timely video. Operating from a place from gratitude because my employer is my investor is the biggest takeaway for me. It makes me see my job in such a different light. Thanks sis!

  7. I am so excited that Iโ€™ve been successful lately at navigating both my investor AND my Dream! Iโ€™ve become the #1 sales rep and support those who are grieving with Grief Inspired! I am writing my second book, consistently make YouTube Videos and am a contributing author for several websites! I never thought All of this was possible but Iโ€™ve found a rhythm that works for me!

  8. I love how you say delivering at your job is just a C level. I need to over deliver and blow people's minds in order to get more freedom! And even though people might judge me for whatever reason, it's okay because while they're judging me, I'm working on my dream! And from previous points Lisa makes that I love is "it's none of my business what other people think of me." Thanks Lisa!

  9. Lisa, thank you for all your videos. You helped me fix all the aspect of my life. my relationship with my self, my relationship with others and my relationship with my job. growing up I used to have all my ducks in a row . No matter what I was going through i always had faith that i will find a way to deal with it. As an adult I went trough a lot I started to lose faith in my ability to get up. I was overwhelmed by all that was going wrong I could not see everything that was going well. your videos helped me brake down what was wrong in my life and I have been fixing it. my relationship with my job is improving and so is my attitude towards everything. Thanks Lisa .

  10. Thank you, thank you, thank you Lisa you are helping me so much and I am so grateful that I meet you. I love you Lisa ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’

  11. Let your job fund your dreams. Invest in yourself. Give your employer your absolute best. Go to work with a joyful heart. So many take aways from this brief but powerful little video. I think the biggest one for me is that I can have both my dream and my career, if I learn to dance between the two of them.

  12. Love love love this! Like always…nothing but truth! Thank you for the reminder!

I just want to say to those who want to be entrepreneurs, Owning your own business doesnt mean you get to be rich without hard work. And once you realize how hard it is sometimes it actually is, you wish you had a 9-5. Its hard work and it is physically and mentally draining. So if you really do want to be an entrepreneur, you better be right in your mind, and your physical state better be strong!

I started a cleaning company but I realizied real quickly I had a lot of competition, it was seriously physical, and I had to set myself apart from the rest so that I could generate cash flow. And enough caah flow to survive…."how was I going to do that?" I had no money, I was on welfare, and newly Single, and I had two little girls that depended on me.

They became my WHY and I got a mentor and financial advisors FOR FREE!! Thats right I said FREE. The help is out there, you have to want it ! And want it bad enough to get it! Go get your dream! You Got this!

"YOU" have everything you need to succeed inside of you. And the world needs your gifts and talents. Shine your lights!

Love you Lisa thank you for reminding me that "my job aka "business" funds my "dream"". And even though it is hard work I cant just give up and mive onto the next project because one day that will be work too. Cleaning isnt what I want to do for ever,!. I am getting older and it is physical, but maybe its time I look to expand and hire a team, so I CAN live MY DREAM!

    Thank you! #lisanicholsrocks

  17. Oh I needed to hear this! I will see my employer as my investor from now on!! I hear you, Iโ€™ll let my payroll pay for my dream!!! AMEN!! 18. Hey Lisa..how do I battle feelings of incompetence?
I am about to graduate from University and recently got an internship but I feel so incompetent and dull around the office cause everyone seems to know what they're doing and I am lost

  19. I have really struggled with this and how to do it. With the practicality of it. I was super resentful, overwhelmed and beaten down. I quit, moved and decided to restart and felt lost when i realized that i have to go back to work… BUT i realize now I needed a break and i have big dreams and the break is allowing me to figure out how to do the dance better this next time around… so yeah i am hopeful for happiness in both my future job and my dream. Thanks for sharing and i will be buying the book!

  20. Oooooooommmmmggggg!!!!! Lisa I just prayed about this last night, asking God to give me a sign. Here you go with my BOL!!!!! I love all that you do and everything you represent. 21. Yes but the investor takes up 80% of your time so then you hardly have time for your dream, or otherwise the strategy time/dream time is rushed and not felt completely because we are so focused on the job and giving so much to the investor. Time to invest in myself. Fully. Or continue to feel worn out.

  22. Thank you so much Lisa i love u and love this as well it has been of Great help. U help me to always keep me Going.

  23. Thank you so much for the continue inspiration. I was struggling with this very thing. I took initiative at work to speak at some workshops that we are hosting. Opportunity knocks. Im taking it in Scrubs and all.

  24. You my Lady…are the only one I know of that truly specks from the Love and core of Soul. I know this as I speck from experience after having been dead once for ten minutes and spent a day back home where we all originate and come from. I also know I have so much to tell, so much to show and so much to teach so many. With the origin and point from which Soul evolved being the same frequency as Love I Understand and fully know you Love just as I do you Lisa… I wish to thank you for all that you are and all that you do for so many.

  25. I love you so much Ms.Lisa Nichols for simply have the courage to be who you are…To allow all the visionary like myself and creative mind know that we can walk into our dreams being out reality by being humble and filled with gratitude that we are worthy enough to allow ourselves to paint our blueprints of how we want dreams to form in our reality…Thank you for being the soul of changing reality during my generation…๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜˜

  42. Lisa Nichols, is for me and I think, I'm not the only person who she touches deeply and in some many ways. her eloquency, her kindness, compassion, and good human have shaking on the core. everyday, I watch her show, I look her up, I admire her. she rekindles my passion and ignites the woods of my hope. oftentime, I finish up with sparkle and a new possibility strike on the horizon. She is definitely, belongs to elite who went through , what I am going through, right here et right now. thank you, cause you inspired and empowered me.

  43. Thank you, Lisa. I found your video from MindValley in Cancun. And since I've fallen in love with your message and implementing it in my life. I'm working on stepping into my greatness and developing it. I want to be so much bigger than what I am right now. And it doesn't really seem logical. But I am going to get there. And I'm going to meet you someday, just to say thank you. Thank you so much โค๐Ÿ˜ญ

  45. I Used To Be A Dreamer

I see myself turning to bitterness and rage
Because I am jealous of everyone's success
Like I should wish them the best
    And pray they are blessed
But instead I hope for their demise
And that they be eaten alive
By an out pour of cries
That sing out "we want you to die"

I know it might seem dark and twisted
    But my insides go livid
When I see someone living out their dreams
    While I'm stuck at home
    Doing nothing
Nothing but feeding my deep depression
    Nothing at all
    Which fuels my uncontrollable aggression

    I used to dream once
And my dreams they did come true
Then they all came crashing down
And I didn't know what to do
    See in life we choose
And I chose to give up
I lost the only thing I ever really loved

And at the time when I had it
I didn't even know I was in love
I took it all for granted
    And abused every second
Now that I've learned my lesson
I realize I should of took advantage

    Of what God had handed
A special gift that unlocked my happiness
    And now that it's gone
    I can only reminisce
    So now Iโ€™m pissed
    My reality canโ€™t be this

Oh how I miss them days
    How I miss them days
    Then again
    I remember
Everyday all Iโ€™d do is complain
    Now I'm filled with pain
Because I can't go back and do it again

    This was a major loss
    But also a win
    Because I learned the lesson
    To always appreciate everything single
    Thing I am ever given

    I trust in the universe
    Everything happens for a reason
    Therefore I have no regrets
    I am blessed
So I still keep on dreamin

I will always be a dreamer
Because dreams really do come true
    And that ainโ€™t no cliche
    Power 2 The Poetry

  46. Fear does not mean freeze it means find ! I felt that so deep I put off opening a business for years because I wasnโ€™t able fork out hundreds of dollars I stop making excuses this year and broke everything down to small task and in three months I have accomplished more then I did in the 3-5 years I spent talking about it so glad Iโ€™m unfrozen and as I approach my launch date your words push and inspire me whether I fall or fly I kno I at least did what I wanted and that knocks down my fear for future ideas j will have ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™

  47. I decided instead of wasting my money on things I didnโ€™t need anymore I was going to start using my employer as my investor and start investing into myself and my future and my dream. And every week Iโ€™ve tried to put in 5% more into my โ€œfunding a dreamโ€ account. I donโ€™t know how much is there off hand..I can make a viable guess at this point, but what difference does it make? When I need to put in more than I can afford, that just means I need to be more successful and do more business and not let myself feel like โ€œwell Iโ€™ve hit my limitsโ€. Limits are for losers, winners have no limits. I made a choice to be inconvenienced, and embrace it! And if worse comes to worse and I absolutely need it to save myself from impending doom…at least I was smart enough to save it instead of going out to eat, or going out with friends and not realizing how much I spent, or buying a new item for my music gear…or buying a photography related item. I live my dream every day, and I am lucky enough to be able to live it every weekend and play music, Iโ€™m lucky enough to be able to book photography gigs and people love my work! Itโ€™s important to remember the micro wins, because without the micro wins the macro wins have less value, because you missed all the opportunity to celebrate along the way.

Lisa, I know Iโ€™ve said it many times, but you sincerely changed my life perspective. Thank you.

  48. This is such an important point. I am a frontline mental health worker, itโ€™s not my dream but I am good at it. We cant all leave our hard or stressful jobs or who would do the ones that support our people in crisis. Who would come when we call 911? Thank you for this, it just helped me clarify something I was stuck on in myself.
    ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿฆ„

  49. Love her spirit!!! So many women now a days are rough but you give a sweetness and true femininity.

  50. I love you Lisa Nichols! I read the Abundance Now book and watched other videos of you. The first few times I heard Funding my dream story, I cried. Then when I hear them again, every time, it's so refreshing and reaffirming.
