Innovation Stories – WDIV’s True Crime Podcast “Shattered”

I think innovation to me means reframing
a listener or a viewers experience with the station they’re getting their news
from. In the case of podcasting giving the listener and experience like they
would read a book from beginning to end in an immersive truthful and
entertaining way. My name is Zak Rosen I’m the director of podcasts at Graham Media. Shattered is a true-crime podcast. Each season we tell the different story
told over a number of episodes. Season one was about these three kids who may or may not have been abducted and killed by their dad. Season two was about a
notorious criminal from Detroit named Rick Wershe, better known as “White Boy Rick.” I think of podcasting as actually complimenting what’s happening on the broadcast side. The podcast side were using a ton of archival footage that’s from television and that only a TV station has the institutional resources
to gather. You know we have stories going back 10 – 15 years that we’re taking
excerpts from and using in the podcast. We shoot 30 minutes of video you see a
minute of it. There’s always more to the story than we can tell because there are
time constraints. But what the podcast has enabled us to do is take all of that report and all of that institutional knowledge, which is vast, and compress it
and to tell the entire story linearly and artfully in a way that someone could
listen from beginning to end without having to, you know, Google or go on the Detroit website and piece together the hundreds of stories. For the most part people watching news on WDIV are local, whereas podcasts… We
literally have listeners from all over the world. Listening to this Detroit story podcasts definitely have opened us up to a whole new audience You don’t often hear people contemplating the news and then thinking about the news in such a deep immersive way as as they are when they’re listening to podcasts and so
when we get emails from people saying I binged the whole series and now I’m
listening again… that’s innovation to me.
