How to Get More Podcast Downloads | 5 Simple Steps

So, you’ve been at this whole podcast
thing for a while. But now you’re thinking, “How can I get more podcast
downloads? Well, today I’m gonna share with you five things that you can do to
get more downloads for your podcast. So, if you’ve been at this for a while or
you’re just getting started I want you to know some very important things. There
are some things that I believe you should be how to minimum doing every
single time you publish a brand-new episode. And the first thing is I want
you to post something on social media every single time you put out a new
episode. And this could be as simple as putting a graphic up that you created in
canva or going live once a week from your business page on Facebook or doing
an Instagram live or posting an insta-story. I don’t care what you do, but you
need to be posting on social media! Why?!? Because it’s free! It’s 100% free! All it
takes is a little bit of effort for you to tell people that are already
following you. They’re already interested in what you have to say – just take the
time and let them know, “Hey guys, I have a brand new podcast episode out. Here it is!”
You’re basically giving it to them on a silver platter whenever you tell people on social media that you have a brand new podcast
episode out. And then you get extra bonus points if you go above and beyond by
doing things like sound bites which if you’re interested in creating podcasts
sound bites I invite you to check out one of these videos right here that show
you exactly what you can do to create podcast sound bites. So you can publish
them anytime you put out a brand new episode. These work great on social
media and it’s definitely a way for you to get attention on your podcast so you
get more podcast downloads. The second thing I want to talk about today is
narrowing down your podcast topic. So I have seen so many podcasts that are very broad. You have like this one subject that could be
like about 50 different things right? If you want to talk about business but then
you talk about being a mom and being fit and being on time and doing this and
eating all the kale and doing that and this is like it’s 50 different things.
Right? Y’all know what I’m talking about! Y’all have seen this on other platforms too. It’s not specific to podcasts. But I’ve noticed that the more specific – the
more you can narrow down a topic – the more you’re gonna see more downloads. So I actually worked with a client…she has this amazing podcast. Oh my gosh, you
should totally go check it out if it’s for you. But she reached a thousand
downloads in her first month! With no audience! She had zero audience when she started! And she got a thousand downloads in the
first month of launching her podcast! And there’s a few reasons behind this. Number
one, because she’s amazing! Okay, like she just tells the best stories and she just
really knows her audience so well. She connects with them! And the reason why is…Number two, she is so specific. So specific! You could just look at the name
of the podcast and see the Happy Homebirth Podcast. Is that gonna be for you
or is it not gonna be for you? You can self-identify immediately if you want to
listen to this podcast. And this is amazing because people that are already
out there they’re looking for this content and they stumble upon her…Tthey’re like, “Oh my gosh! This is what I have been needing. This is what I need so
bad and Katelyn has it. She has brought it to me all in a beautiful package with
the most gorgeous stories…” Seriously, you all should go follow her
on Instagram because it’s just it’s amazing. But she was able to get a
thousand downloads in her first month of podcasting because she was so specific.
So I encourage you to narrow down your topic. Niche down to blow up! Because that
is what’s gonna get you more podcast downloads. So I want you to let me know in the comments below. What is your podcast
about? If you’ve already started a podcast, I want to know what is the
specific topic that you speak on. And if you haven’t started a podcast, what do
you think you want to talk about? And just like…get as specific as possible
try to just narrow it down. Like use those identifying words. For example, I
teach entrepreneurs how to start, launch, and market their podcast. So it tells you
what I talk about I talk about: start, launch, market your podcast. And it’s for
entrepreneurs. So it’s very specific! So put it in the comments below what your
topic is about and what you talk about on your podcast. Okay, let’s get back to
the things we’re talking about today. The third thing that you can do to get more
podcast downloads is notify your email list whenever new episodes are out. This
is such a cool way to notify your audience. It’s like a built-in machine on
the back end. Right? Like you publish a new episode and
then you can tell your people that are on your email list. Like they’re already
primed and ready to hear exactly what you have to say. You can say, “Hey guys, by
the way there’s a brand new podcast episode out.” And a lot of the time people
will click the link to go listen to your podcast episode or it’s gonna prompt
them to remember later when they get their phone out…they’re at the gym or
they’re on their commute…they’re driving and they’re like, “Oh yeah, they said they
had a brand new podcast episode out today so I’m gonna go listen to it. (Because that’s what I do when I’m in the car and that’s what I do when I’m in the
gym).” But these are the people that have already said, “Yes, I want to hear more
from you!” So take advantage of that opportunity and deliver something of
value to them. That’s what you’re doing right? You’re already creating this
amazing content! So tell people that it’s there. Tell them! Tell the audience that
you already have built-in, “Hey, I got some more information for you that you’re
just gonna love today!” Okay, the fourth thing that I have to share with you
about getting more podcast downloads is a little more advanced. I don’t want you
to do this when you’re first starting out, but if you’ve been in the game for a
while… I encourage you to publish more often. So
I say this is a more advanced option because I don’t want you to stress
yourself out with your podcast. Because when you stress yourself out…it’s not
fun anymore. So I don’t want you to put pressure on yourself like, “Oh, I have to
publish a podcast every single day…or I have to do it three times a week or four
times a week or two times a week even.” Because if you’re not ready for that…
then I don’t want you to do it. But if you’ve been podcasting for a while,
consider publishing more often if you want to see an increase in your podcast
downloads. Because I personally did this. I went from publishing once a week every
Tuesday to publishing twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And I did see a
bump in my numbers, but I do not recommend this if you are not ready. But
like I had already been doing this for over a year before I switched to doing
twice a week. So definitely get your bearings first and then consider this as
an option to get more podcast downloads. But I am curious, how often do you
publish a week right now? I want you to put in the comments below what day of the week that you publish and how often you publish. I’m just
generally curious because I love to talk about podcasting so much! So I’m curious
how often do you publish and what day of the week do you publish your podcast?
Okay, and the last thing the fifth thing that we’re going to talk about to get
you more podcast downloads is pretty simple. Tell everybody about it! Like
everybody that you see! Not in a spammy way. I am by no means telling you to be
spammy and say, “Check out my podcast! Check out this!!” No! I’m not talking about that. But I am talking about telling people that
would be an ideal listener of yours that you have a podcast. Like I’ve gone as far
as…and this is totally with just close friends and family. But when I tell
someone, “I have a podcast!” And they’re like, “Oh what is a podcast?…What’s your podcast about?” I will literally… I’ll take their phone and say, “Here, let
me show you.” And then I’ll say, “Oh look, you’re subscribe to my show.” But again that’s
just my close friends and family I wouldn’t just do that to any random
person or a complete stranger. But tell people that
you have a podcast! Because if you don’t tell people, how are people gonna know?
And again, it goes back to adding value! tell people, “Hey, if you listen to my show,
I can help you save money…or if you listen to my podcast, then I can teach
you about podcasting…or if you listen to my podcast and I can help you live a
healthier lifestyle!” Whatever value that you’re delivering to your audience,
that’s what you need to tell people. “This podcast can help you because…” [Fill in the blank.] But another way to tell more people about it is to attend
live events that are within your industry. These could be conferences and workshops. This could be things that you attend online: whether it’s Facebook lives that
you get to, you know, collaborate with other people. But I encourage you to talk
to other people that are your potential listeners online all the time. Because
for one, it’s a lot of fun! It’ll actually get you even more content ideas and
things to talk about in the future and help you understand your ideal audience.
But two, it’ll just get you in front of more people. And the last thing I want to
talk about when it comes to telling everybody about your podcast is I want
you to consider guesting on other people’s podcasts. I recently did a
podcast episode on The Proffitt Podcast that was all about how to be a guest on
other people’s podcast. And I had a guest expert on who has done amazing things!
She gave herself this challenge that she was gonna do so many podcast pitches to
other podcast in 30 days and the results were so incredible! So I encourage you go
check out this podcast episode and you have to go grab her free guideline
which is the “Insiders Guide to Guesting on Podcasts”. It is so incredible. It’s
filled with so many nuggets of wisdom. And I just really encourage you to do
this because the more that you show up in front of other people, in front of
other audiences, and you tell them how much value your podcast can add to their
lives…the more podcast downloads you’re gonna get. I promise you. I know for me personally I’m gonna be working on being a guest on more
podcasts in the upcoming months, but I think that it’s something that you
should focus on now. Like if you want to see an increase in downloads, then I
highly encourage you to consider guesting on other people’s podcasts. But
just to recap everything that we talked about for you to get more podcast
downloads: the first thing is use social media to promote your podcasts – like that
is the bare minimum! You need to be doing this every single week. The next thing I
want you to do is narrow your topic down even further. Get super specific about
exactly what you’re talking about and who your audience is. The third thing is
notify your email list when a new episode comes out. The fourth thing I
want you to do is publish episodes more often – if you’re to this point in your
podcasting journey. And, of course, the fifth thing is just tell more people
about it. Tell people about your show and how it can add value to their lives.
