HiPPO’s are killers (of ideas)

hippos are killers but not the large
animals that live in Africa, even though statistically those are meant to be some
of the most dangerous animals in the world, killing far more humans than lions,
tigers and sharks Today I’m talking about a different type of hippo one that kills ideas and entrepreneurial spirit hi it’s Nick Skillicon here from idea to value big hi there to all the value drivers out there what do I mean when I talk
about a hippo killing an idea? well as I said I’m not talking about the large animal I’m talking about a “hippo” highest paid person’s opinion these are concepts where usually people in an organization are deferring to the
highest paid person in the room to make the decision on whether or not an idea
should go forward, whether or not a ideas worth investing in, during something like
a brainstorming session or during a review process just effectively ignoring
all of the data about the quality of the idea and just going on the gut feeling
of the highest-paid person in the room in general this will be the most senior
person in the room, and the drawback with this is that if you’re relying on one
decision-maker to just use their opinion to determine whether or not an idea
should go forward well then there’s a lot of psychological biases that go into
the way that person’s thinking and whether or not they’re going to like the
idea or not quite often the people in the room who are there for the longest
amount of time will also have their own cumulative knowledge and cumulative
experience about what works and there’s a tendency of people to reject new
information and reject things that go against their way of thinking now this
might be ok in situations where you’re making low level decisions about ideas
which aren’t actually that important but when you’re assessing new ideas that are
fundamentally different than what’s gone previously in the organization,
especially ideas that are fundamentally different than what the highest paid
person in the room is used to well, their natural tendency is to be fearful of those ideas and only want to see the problems with it this is even more of an
issue if its the first time that this highest-paid
person in the room hears about this idea so the tendency is for them to reject
these new ideas but what can you do to get them more on board and to actually
help engage them in the idea generation process and actually help get their
support for the ideas instead? well one of the primary things you can do is to
get them involved in the idea generation and assessment process as early as
possible if the highest-paid person in the room doesn’t think that a new idea
is a threat to them but instead feels like they’ve contributed towards
the development of the idea by either helping set the guidelines right at the
beginning or even be involved in the idea generation process itself, well then
they’re much more likely to see the value in it at long-term and especially
during times when it might come up for review in front of other people they’ll
be able to speak of the benefits not just play devil’s advocate and find find
problems with the idea so get them involved as early as possible in the
process make sure that what they consider valuable is aligned with what
you consider valuable and maybe even adjust the way that you’re developing
the idea to fit in with the way that they prefer to work make sure that the
first time they see the idea they’re not shocked by it so that’s how you can get
the highest paid person’s opinion to match the opinion that you’re hopefully
looking for as well and it’ll really decrease the likelihood that this hippo
is gonna be trying to kill your ideas if you liked that, make sure you share it
