Daybreak Podcast – August 9, 2019

DENSE FOG ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR MUCH OF SOUTHWEST MISSOURI, INCLUDING BOTH SPRINGFIELD AND BRANSON, UNTIL 9 AM. AS OUR FRONT MOVES SOUTH AND CLOUDS CLEAR UNDER A SOAKED ATMOSPHERE, PATCHY TO DENSE FOG IS DEVELOPING. GIVE YOURSELF EXTRA TIME ON THE ROADS AND USE HEADLIGHTS! FLASH FLOOD WATCH HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR MISSOURI COUNTIES, REMAINS IN NORTHWEST ARKANSAS UNTIL 10 AM. WITH A SHIFT SOUTH IN OUR FRONT, A FEW MORE HEAVY DOWNPOURS ARE POSSIBLE IN NORTHERN ARKANSAS THIS MORNING. OTHERWISE, THE WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAIN THREAT IS OVER FOR THE OZARKS. OUR STALLED FRONT NUDGED SOUTH OVERNIGHT, BRINGING THE HEAVIEST RAIN TO NORTHERN OKLAHOMA AND NORTHERN ARKANSAS. THE LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN THREAT WILL CONTINUE THERE THROUGH THIS MORNING WITH ANOTHER 1-2″ RAIN POSSIBLE. RESIDUAL FLOODING IS POSSIBLE THIS MORNING IN EXTREME SOUTHWEST MISSOURI WHERE THE HEAVIEST RAIN FELL YESTERDAY. REMEMBER TO NEVER DRIVE THROUGH A FLOODED ROADWAY! THIS AFTERNOON, A FEW SPOTTY STORMS CANNOT BE RULED OUT IN SOUTHERN MISSOURI, BUT MOST LOCATIONS WILL STAY DRY. SKIES SHOULD STAY MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A FEW BREAKS OF SUNSHINE. WITH SOME SUN RETURNING, HIGHS SHOULD BE WARMER IN THE MIDDLE 80’S. AN ISOLATED STORM IS POSSIBLE TONIGHT WITH WARM, MUGGY LOWS IN THE LOWE 70’S. TOMORROW OUR FRONT SHIFTS BACK TO THE NORTH AS HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS IN FROM THE SOUTH. THIS WILL KEEP A CHANCE FOR A FEW SHOWERS/ STORMS IN THE FORECAST WITH MOST LOCATIONS STAYING DRYING. ANY STORM THAT POPS WILL BE CAPABLE OF LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN AND LIGHTNING. HIGHS WILL CONTINUE TO HEAT UP, IN THE UPPER 80’S TO NEAR 90 DEGREES. SUNDAY THE FRONT WILL SIT TO THE NORTH WITH HEAT AND HUMIDITY SURGING INTO THE OZARKS. AN ISOLATED STORM WILL STILL BE POSSIBLE BUT I EXPECT MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES. HIGHS WILL GET HOT WITH TEMPERATURES SOARING INTO LOWER 90’S FEELING EVEN HOTTER WITH THE HUMIDITY. EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNINGS/ ADVISORIES WILL LIKELY BE NEEDED. MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES REMAIN ON MONDAY AND IT WILL BE HOT. TEMPERATURES IN THE LOWER 90’S WILL FEEL CLOSER TO 105 DEGREES. THE HEAT BREAKS WEDNESDAY WITH A COLD FRONT COMING THROUGH WITH ISOLATED STORMS ON TUESDAY. LAUREN YOU MIGHT HAVE NOTICED A FEW MORE EIGHT-LEGGED FRIENDS CRAWLING AROUND LATELY– THAT’S DUE TO A SPIDER OUTBREAK THAT IS TYPICAL DURING THE WARMER MONTHS. BUT, HAVE NO FEAR, OUR HANNAH ZETTL JOINS US LIVE THIS MORNING WITH SOME SPIDER SOLUTIONS HANNAH THERE ARE MORE THAN 470 INDIVIDUAL SPECIES OF SPIDER IN THE STATE. THEY LIVE IN OUR GARDENS, GET INTO OUR GARAGES AND CRAWL AROUND OUR HOMES. WHILE SPIDERS ARE MOSTLY BENEFICIAL CREATURES THAT REDUCE THE POPULATIONS OF DANGEROUS INSECTS, THEY CAN CAUSE ISSUES IF THEY ARE NOT PROPERLY MANAGED. TO DECREASE THE NUMBER OF SPIDERS ENTERING YOUR HOME: PREVENT COMMON BUGS, WHICH ARE THE MAIN FOOD SOURCE FOR SPIDERS. CLEAN UP CLUTTER IN YOUR HOME AND KEEP UP WITH YOUR LANDSCAPING SO THEY DON’T HAVE AS MANY PLACES TO HIDE OUT. lauren KOLR-10 SPOKE WITH THE MAN THAT SAYS HE IS THE ONE WHO HELD THE ARMED MAN AT GUNPOINT UNTIL POLICE ARRIVED THE MAN THAT STOPPED *THIS* ARMED MAN OUTSIDE THE WALMART NEIGHBORHOOD MARKET IS A FORMER FIRE-FIGHTER… HE SAYS HE DETAINED HIM WITH HIS OWN FIREARM UNTIL POLICE ARRIVED. NOW, THIS FORMER FIREFIGHTER HAS ASKED US TO REFRAIN FROM USING HIS NAME AND SHOWING HIS FACE. HE SAYS HE WAS CARRYING A CONCEALED WEAPON AND HELD THE ARMED MAN IN HIS 20’S UNTIL POLICE ARRIVED ABOUT 30 SECONDS LATER. THIS FORMER FIREFIGHTER WAS SHOPPING FOR GROCERIES WITH HIS WIFE AT THAT WALMART WHEN STAFF PULLED THE FIRE ALARM. HE SAYS AFTER THAT…IT WAS CHAOS. STAFF WERE PUSHING EVERYONE TOWARD THE DOOR. HE SAYS HE’S HOPEFUL THAT BY STEPPING IN…HE PREVENTED SOMETHING TERRIBLE FROM HAPPENING. “And I walked up to the grass and asked him if he was the male inside and he stated, ‘yes,’ and I drew my weapon, told him to put his hands in the air. He complied. He was compliant the whole time. He videotaping on his phone, which was kind of odd, but he complied with my request that he keep his hands in the air and he asked me to come up there and take his weapon from him. I told him to keep his hands off of it and keep his hands in the air and when the police arrived that they would take his weapon. I’ve been in public safety for a long time and even though I’m no longer in public safety I still feel that I can still protect people if I need to and that was my intention. Hopefully my actions prevented something like El Paso from happening.” NAME THE FORMER FIREFIGHTER SAYS HE DID NOT KNOW IF THE ARMED MAN WAS READY TO INFLICT PAIN OR IF IT WAS A PROTEST. POLICE SAY THEY WERE THANKFUL FOR THE QUICK RESPONSE FROM BOTH THE FORMER FIREFIGHTER AND OFFICERS. LAUREN TO MAKE SURE WE’RE TACKLING BOTH SIDES OF THIS DISCUSSION, WE SAT DOWN WITH THE OWNER OF EAGLE ARMORY, IN NORTH SPRINGFIELD. WE ASKED ZACH TERHARK ABOUT RESPONSIBITY OF OWNING A GUN HE SAYS, THE VAST MAJORITY OF GUN OWNERS WOULD NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS. AND OWNING A FIREARM IS ABOUT DEFENSE. ZACH TERHARK OWNER OF EAGLE ARMORY GUN STORE “I’D SAY THE WHOLE POINT OF EITHER OPEN CARRYING OR CONCEAL CARRYING A FIREARM, IS NOT TO GET ATTENTION. IT’S DEFINITELY NOT TO MAKE A POLITICAL POINT. IT’S TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU AND YOURSELF. AND SO, OBVIOUSLY, BEHAVING LIKE THIS IS DEFINITELY IRRESPONSIBLE AND COUNTER PRODUCTIVE. ESPECIALLY WITH RECENT EVENTS.” LAUREN TERHARK SAYS THERE ARE EVENTS WHERE PEOPLE PUBLICLY DISPLAY THEIR GUNS, BUT IT’S USUALLY A PRE- PLANNED EVENT, AND THE PUBLIC KNOWS IT’S HAPPENING. HE ALSO BELIEVES THE MAN PUT HIS OWN LIFE IN DANGER, BY DISPLAYING HIS WEAPON IN THIS WAY. LAUREN WE ALSO REACHED OUT TO WALMART — TO FIND OUT WHAT THE STORE’S POLICY IS WITH CARRYING GUNS ON STORE PROPERTY. TO FIND OUT WHAT THE STORE’S POLICY IS WITH CARRYING GUNS ON STORE PROPERTY. RANDY HARGROVE — A SPOKESPERSON FOR WALMART SAYS THAT EACH WALMART LOCATION ABIDES BY LOCAL AND STATE LAWS WE CHECKED THE FRONT AREA OF THE WALMART TONIGHT –WE FOUND NO SIGNS POSTED ABOUT CARRYING OR RESTRICTING FIREARMS BEING BROUGHT INTO THE STORE.
