A PASSENGER IN THE CAR, RICHARD GUSTIN, IS IN THE HOSPITAL IN SERIOUS CONDITION. LAUREN BRINGING CRIME INTO FOCUS LAUREN A MAN FROM WAYNESVILLE HAS BEEN SENTENCED FOR ALLEGEDLY STABBING A FAMILY MEMBERTO DEATH IN 20-18. KEAVEN SHAW SUBMITTED AN ALFORD PLEA BACK IN MAY…. MEANING HE DIDN’T ADMIT GUILT BUT BELIEVES THEIR IS ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO CONVICT. YESTERDAY HE WAS SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS IN PRISON. COURT DOCUMENTS SAY SHAW STABBED HIS GRADMOTHER, ANNA PAHULA IN THE CHEST, KILLING HER. SHAW ALSO REMAINS CHARGED IN THREE CASES OF ASSAULT OF A SPECIAL VICTIM IN PULASKI AND MILLER COUNTIES FOR ACTIONS THAT OCCURRED AFTER HIS PLEA OF GUILTY. JOE A RECENT CBS NEWS INVESTIGATION REVEALED A GROWING NUMBER OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS SAY THEY’VE ADDED IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING. BUT HUNDREDS OF OFFICERS IN MULTIPLE STATES HAVE RECENTLY BEEN EXPOSED FOR RACIST SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS, WHCIH HAS BROUGHT ON CONCERN ABOUT POLICE BIAS. LAUREN A PROJECT RECENTLY FLAGGED THOUSANDS OF RACIST AND DEROGATORY SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS, INCLUDING SOME FROM 22 CURRENT ST. LOUIS CITY OFFICERS — LIKE ONE THAT COMPARED BLACK LIVES MATTER TO THE K-K-K. CBS’S JEFF PEGUES SPOKE TO AN OFFICER WHOSE DEPARTMENT IS AT THE CENTER OF THAT CONTROVERSY. (JEFF PEGUES:Do you think that there are white supremacists on the police force? (HEATHER TAYLOR: Yes, I think so. (JEFF : You didn’t even pause. (HEATHER ) Have you seen some of the Facebook posts of some of our suspended officers right now? Yes. JOE HEATHER TAYLOR IS AN ALMOST 19 YEAR VETERAN ON THE ST. LOUIS METRO POLICE FORCE. THE DEPARTMENT TOLD CBS NEWS THAT IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING HAS BEEN MANDATORY FOR OFFICERS ONCE A YEAR SINCE OCTOBER OF 2014, WHICH WAS TWO MONTHS AFTER MICHAEL BROWN’S DEATH. (JEFF PEGUES: Implicit bias training? They’ve had that here. (HEATHER TAYLOR:Yes. (JEFF Has it worked? (HEATHER I think that’s pretty obvious that it hasn’t. LARUEN IF IMPLICIT BIAS TRAINING *IS* MANDATORY IT DOESN’T SEEM TO HAVE LEFT AN IMPRESSION ON HEATHER TAYLOR. OTHER POLICE OFFICERS THERE HAD SIMILAR RESPONSES. CBS TRIED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE POLICE CHIEF — WHO DIDN’T WANT TO TALK. SO PEGUES SAT DOWN WITH JIMMIE EDWARDS — THE MAN WHO HIRED THE CHIEF. EDWARDS IS THE PUBLIC SAFETY DIRECTOR FOR THE CITY. “….(JEFF PEGUES We had an officer tell us she knows that there are white supremacists on the police force. (JIMMIE EDWARDS: I’m not surprised. My job is to root that person out. (JEFF implicit bias training. Is it mandatory for all officers? (JIMMIE Yes. It is mandatory. (INTERVIEWER: We’ve talked to officers who don’t remember taking implicit bias classes. (JIMMIE Yeah, well, everybody in the city of St. Louis, have taken implicit bias training (INTERVIEWER: And they can’t remember it? (JIMMIE I don’t know. That’s a– that’s a good question for them. (INTERVIEWER: That’s odd. (JIMMIE It is odd. ……..” LAUREN EDWARDS ALSO SAID USE OF FORCE INCIDENTS ARE DOWN IN SAINT LOUIS — BUT THE CITY STILL HAS A LONG WAY TO GO. JOE: NOW LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT’S TRENDING ON GOOGLE THIS MORNING… JOE: CHECK US OUT ONLINE AT OZARKSFIRST DOT COM. THANKS FOR WATCHING! WE’LL SEE YOU BACK HERE AT MID DAY.
