Ciaran McMeeken Podcast #18 // The Challenges Of Being Your Own Boss

Humanity’s consciousness is reflected in our society as the innately human belief system We get stronger because we learn how to cope with these things Talking about these real real things we just see that we’re so similar man. Welcome to the Ciaran McMeeken podcast Kia Ora everybody welcome along. My name is Ciaran This is the Ciaran McMeeken podcast, and I’m so happy to have you here today with me just me today. I Didn’t have any guests for the podcast today. So it’s just me and I knew this was going to be happening a few days ago, and I asked my girlfriend Talia What would you like to hear me share about if it was just me. What would you want to hear? And she said I would love to hear about Like what what it’s like to be self-employed creative person. What are the challenges you face? What’s the process actually like and I just thought that was read and I’ve like done some Posts and some podcasts hinting at this this these types of things But I would I love to just sit down and talk to you today about what what it’s like No filter just what it’s like to be a self-employed creative person for me. I’m a musician I obviously make podcasts do vlogs and It’s such a fun Rewarding Satisfying thing to do. I just I’m constantly kind of on that knife edge of like creative satisfaction and and fear basically of like in doubt and it’s it’s can be a little stressful from time to time because it’s a Kind of like a dangerous place to be it seems anyway read my mind the construct of my mind perceives it as danger It’s actually not dangerous at all. There’s no lions. There’s no lions around but the ego feels danger it feels like fear of judgment from your peers and fear of failure and fear of that kind of I Don’t know being laughed at you know, the kind of old childhood traumas get reignited so Yeah, I’m gonna dive into this today. I’m gonna go into the process and I was thinking about this just before Like we’re so used to seeing final products. We’re so used to seeing finished movies finished songs Finished videos of some kind all this stuff and which is great. I absolutely love that. I love that We don’t have to just see like people’s process all the time. There would be so weird and I think it’s also part of the reason why we love behind-the-scenes videos is because we get to see People and they’re like in their truth what what it was actually like what actually happened in the making of this artwork that I love and I think it’s so so cool and I even think behind, the scenes videos have a certain amount of production and editing that goes with them because to be seen in the raw rest’ form is super vulnerable and it’s like It’s messy life and the process is super messy Hence why it’s probably not shared a lot because it’s like it’s us humans. We can be very erratic and very random and and it’s seemingly nonsensical at times and it’s Can be all over the place and that’s the process for you. The process is so not linear I mean you sit in on any songwriting session and it’s like this It’s like a it’s just like a wave of randomness, you might start writing about a certain topic you might be writing about a girlfriend and then it takes a tangent to the girlfriend’s dead and an Experience that they went on 20 years ago and that leads into you know a car road trip on the south coast of New Zealand at just These conversations open up about life and you just go on this absolute rabbit hole and it’s That’s what’s so interesting about being a songwriter is like and so satisfying it’s like man, we started writing this song about this and we ended up here and The endless that would never have known that they just listened to the to the love song about the road trip but they didn’t know where that conversation started and That to me is just so interesting and I think it’s important to acknowledge that process and I was just chatting to someone today about like why I started this this podcast and a big part of it was because When I write songs with people we do that we just talk about life I’m asked them the whoever I’m writing with the question like hey, what’s the biggest thing going on in your life at the moment? What’s the thing that’s impacting you the most and you can only imagine the answers that that come out all? sorts of stuff personal stories like challenges dynamics with friends family relationships all of the nitty-gritty stuff and those conversations are really personal and messy and yeah, just raw and The point I said the reason I started this podcast was to like to document that side of things not just the song at the end of at the end of the day, so So, yeah, I’m gonna do that today I’ve got some notes here of some stuff I wanted to cover and Basically just highlight. There’s probably eight to ten things here that That I see in my own life that things I’m sure I’ve been challenged with unchallenged with today and You know, I’ve got these these bullet points, but I’m kind of gonna riff on things So this in of itself is process in action, you know, I’ve got a brief outline But we’re just gonna kind of see where this goes. So this is walking the walk in real time Let’s see where it goes So first of all, I want to talk about discipline because when you’re when you’re obviously self-employed you work by yourself There’s no boss telling you to show up to work at nine o’clock Stop work at 5:00 p.m There’s nothing it’s just you so there has to be a real certain amount discipline to show up to the page or Show up to the laptop or guitar or whatever it is And that has to come from yourself and that there can be easy as anything some days and super challenging Some days to find that motivation to show up and and when things are going well, it’s it’s great when you’ve got I don’t know things in the pipeline that you’re working towards and and and all of that stuff, it’s it can be great and then sometimes when maybe you’re at a loose end or you’ve just finished a project and You don’t there’s no one saying oh you’re on vacation now you can have a rest It can be kind of battle in your mind of like what do I do now? Do I rest do I take a day off? Do I work on something else? It’s you’ve got a you’ve got to create all of this stuff by yourself So that can be a challenge and of itself you have to have really good leadership over your own mind and the awareness to see See your own life from from a zoomed out perspective of being like, okay You’ve just finished this project. You’ve just finished an EP it’s time to take some real time off to regenerate to go on to go and fill up again so that you can pour that energy into something new but I think one of the challenges I have is as Just wanting to keep going keep going. So scheduling time off can be a real challenge and genuinely Taking that rest because I think a big challenge for a lot of Self-employed people is not knowing how to switch off not knowing how to just take a break Because there’s always something you can be doing. That’s so so true There’s always the to-do list is constantly filling up for those people watching the video I’m going to show you my to-do list here and It’s just never ending it’s just a book full of to-do lists and One thing you can rest assured is that that thing will keep filling itself up. So You’ve got to take time off and you’ve got to you’ve got to be disciplined with that you’ve got to like consciously choose when to switch off and Be intentional turn your phone off Don’t don’t book any meetings On a certain day, you know I’ve actually recently started taking Sundays off and that’s I’ve been doing this for like 7 6 7 years now and I would have days off for sure But there would be random they’d be like armed and take a Tuesday off or you know An opportunities come up to go for a road trip. I’m gonna go there and that’s cool. I love that. I love that spontaneity But and I Probably continue to keep keep that in my life either I don’t want to turn into like a you know, a lab rat just running on the on the exercycle thing But it’s also really nice to have a structure in your life. I think It’s one of these funny things because I think a lot of people hate that structure they hate I’ve got to go to work today and I can’t wait for the weekend and all that stuff and I and I get that and That’s one of the great things about being self-employed is that it’s you have this flexibility There is no boss saying dude, you you you’re on the clock. You cannot leave There isn’t that but I think with that freedom Comes all sorts of challenges and of itself as like again it goes back to the discipline thing. It’s like there is always something you can be doing and If you’re just having days off all the time, it’s like you know You may not being as pretty you may not be being as productive as you can And you may not achieve the things that your heart actually really wants to achieve your your end Goal, or your your ultimate purpose if you’re just kind of laxing around just you know being hippie dippie You may not be actually giving your your job or your work the utmost attention and energy that it needs so Yeah, that’s that can be a challenge For sure And it’s it’s something I’m playing around with at the moment this you know six day working week Sunday completely off and I’ve been doing that for like three weeks only three weeks and I’m gonna see how it goes so far. It’s been really nice to actually really switch off on a Sunday and just Phone off don’t look at anything. Just really Have a break and I was actually inspired by a guy called Mehdi. Hapa Yeah, I think it’s how you say his last name. Shout out to you MIDI. You inspired me with that, bro Just saying basically his theory is that he’s like his theory on it is that we need human he believes human beings need one day off every week at least one day off and That just spoke to me I was like, yeah, like right now I feel like I need that when your workload is high I feel like you just need a day just to decompress fully so yeah, and I guess that leads into the next the next little topic which is around balance, you know, and this is such a Buzzword. My my dad always says that life is about balanced life. So just you gotta find balance and it’s like what? Yes you do What does that even mean? And how do you how do you find balance and I guess for me balance is It’s just when you’re finding that nice middle ground between pushing and pulling pushing being Pushing and pulling back. I should say pushing being like going for it right now. I’m pushing I’m doing I’m sitting down creating something and While I’ve got the energy I feel great right now. It’s like 11:30 in the morning Energy’s high and I can almost guarantee that in about 3 or 4 hours. I’m going to start to fade energy wise and that’s gonna be the time where I know I need to pull back and recharge and fill up and not just push through because I Think it’s that push through that That leads to stress which leads to illness which can lead to to death that’s super extreme, but Over a long period of time that’s what’s going to happen If you’re just constantly stressing your body and not giving it the risk that it’s actually asking for can lead to illness so That is my thoughts on it and I have been applying this for a for a while now, but but way more intentionally in the last 6 to 12 months of Giving myself the space to have a break when my body’s actually needing it not just pushing through So and it’s generally around that three four o’clock time, you know, I start work generally around 8 9 o’clock in the morning. I Start my mice things, you know, whatever that is for the day And generally around 3 or 4 o’clock I’m gonna start to fade in sometimes around lunchtime – I might take a little micro break go and do some yoga go move my Body a little bit go do some breathing something go for a walk. Whatever it is take a break and fill up and This is that kind of balance on a on the micro level of day-to-day stuff and then is that that balance of on the macro of like the the zoomed out perspective of like Okay, you’ve been working for the honors project for four three four months at the end of that you balance it out with some some real restoration and and fill up again and and have that balance with you know work your mahi as US Kiwis would say and playfulness and friends and family and Being silly like finding that balance Throughout the day and throughout your year of just enjoying The process as much as possible and enjoying joint life Tyler yet, my girlfriend said this to me last night because she’s she’s out on own I’m like a three of she’s just gone up to somewhere at Columbus Ohio to do some work doing her fiber fiber optic stuff and You know in her heart, she it’s not her total passion, you know she wants to be doing You know body work and sharing dance and movement and yoga and stuff and you know Doing fiber optic laying cables is not exactly there. But she said like, how can I bring? How can I bring that full juicy energy that I get when I do my body work? How can I bring that into my day-to-day work because the price this is like there’s no destination with all of this. That’s like What it is whatever situation you’re in this is your life, so Like you we need to be super intentional with how we create that because this is your life whatever it is you’re doing There’s no like there’s no like our one day one day when I get to that goal I’m gonna start enjoying life like this. Is it this really the process is the juice of everything? So I thought it was a really interesting insight and I’ll be curious to check in with her and be like have you you know? How’s that been going? Have you been able to bring that juice? to laying fiber So yeah that balances as as such an interesting topic and in creating their balance intentionally creating their balance not just Being you know taken on that tidal wave of a net flow of life, wherever it goes. It’s like No Even though the rest of the world may say you get a 30-minute break at twelve o’clock and then you work on through it’s like that may work for some people but for some people that doesn’t work and you have to be really bold and courageous to say Hey, I’m I’m taking a break right now, even though it’s unconventional If that works for you, that’s great And I think that’s ultimately what it comes down to is that being creative self-employed? You need to be very curious about what works for you. And what doesn’t work for you as a little a Little animal out there. What? Is that a groundhog? He’s just chillin eating some grass. Anyway tangent Structure I’ve kind of just been talking about this but I Think it’s worth going into a little deeper like creating structure in your life. You know, I’m a big lists guy And I’m relatively flexible with everything. I don’t have like from 10:00 a.m. Till 11:00 a.m. You’re doing this from 11:00 a.m To 12:00 a.m. You’re doing 12 p.m. You doing this and so on I don’t have that but I do I Do have that structure of the week as I’ve been talking about? You know I’ve got and this is something I’ve been applying recently to I’m gonna bring this up Here, so I have a weekly schedule which I’ve been Applying for the last when did I create that? Maybe the last couple of months And I’m just experimenting with this So by no means take this as truth, but it could be something to try out if you’re one of these people that just feels a little kind of stressed out or a little overwhelmed by all of the different kind of demands of being Being self employed which it can be a lot. There’s just so many different things you have to do and For me, there’s there’s different whole different worlds podcasting is so different to writing songs Vlogging is so different to podcasting. It’s just a whole different mindset. I need to get into so for me. It’s been how – really Compartmentalize that in two days. So right now I’m playing around with recording and editing a vlog on a Monday Checking the Edit and releasing the vlog on a Tuesday recording the podcast on a Wednesday which it is today. Yes go me Edit the podcast tomorrow and write my newsletter tomorrow, which is a Thursday Friday is update my website and release my podcast and release my newsletter as well and then Saturday is to make some kind of music video and really set some kind of fun playful music video and as I read this I’m super mindful of the fact that like I’ve got one day a week that is totally dedicated to music and I Don’t think that’s enough right now if I want like music is super important to me. It’s my number one thing and It’s something that I need. I probably need to step into like doing more often like getting more music maybe I can get a music orientated thing on a Wednesday and As I’m reading this, I’m almost cringing at have structured. This is Because big part of me loved my old life of like Just being kind of cruzi and going to the beach, you know 2 o’clock and maybe writing a song in the afternoon and going round to my mates and it was all very music orientated Which was great But I always felt called Especially over the last couple of years that I wanted to be doing something slightly different I wanted to share more of the behind-the-scenes and do what I’m doing now I always felt called to do that but to do that I found that I needed to like add more structure into my life because everything was just a bit random and chaotic and and and it was kind of stressing me out because you know I had no sit day that I would do the vlog I wanted to do it But I had no sit day that I’d do it and release it So I’ve had to start incorporating this structure and it is totally a working project in progress I don’t know if this is gonna stick around like this. It’s gonna Probably be edited and and you know Ari Adjusted from time to time, but that’s how it that’s it how it stands right now And it seems to be working but I have noticed my music has taken a little bit of a hit not you know I’m releasing an EP and stuff at the moment, which is great But my actual singing like I don’t sing as much anymore, which I’m actually enjoying for the time being I’m enjoying having a little bit of a break From it the actual playing and stuff But I’ve noticed my my usual singing voice has deteriorated a little bit. And I know that will come back up You know when I start singing regularly, it comes back up, but just just being aware of the changes Aa-men I’ve noticed since I’ve started this This structure that always started doing podcast and vlogging that my voice isn’t as as strong as it used to be No judgment on that just noticing again so Yeah, everything. I mean everything’s a bit of a work in progress, I think This you know this new structure of mine is a work in progress So I’m just just monitoring it and just observing it from it from that zoomed out perspective. And yeah, so be it Staying positive and motivated Wow, this is this is a big one because I Spend a lot of time working by myself, especially since I’ve moved to the USA like I’m still getting settled here like I don’t I don’t have I haven’t made a lot of friends over here because I’ve been Working so much as well there haven’t and I’ve been living in the countryside I haven’t had a lot of time to like go out and meet people and Particularly go out and make creative people. So I’ve been doing a lot of like calls back home to my friends and and Staying connected to that community Because that’s so super important. We’re like social beings. We need that that friendship that camaraderie to like stay sane in this life. So So Yes, staying positive has been a very big challenge for me in the last six months, especially starting these new endeavors. It’s I’ve had to step into outside of my comfort zone big time and quite sensitive to you know releasing a podcast and it only getting X amount of views and being like oh like am I doing the right thing, you know, all these types of thoughts stuck of like doubt and and I’ve had to really start applying that Long-term mindset of being like dude. You’ve just started this whole new endeavor Think ten years down the track don’t think, you know release by release by release It’s like this is at probably a ten year game that I’ve just stepped into and this is day dot So I’ve had to exercise that a lot just that Being my own best mate not getting caught up in the stories and doubts of my mind I’ve really liked taking myself by the hand at being like come on bro like you got this man You got a you’ve got to be very resilient here and think long-term Don’t get caught up in this these micro, you know, just kind of bullshit at the end of the day But you know that like the ego takes a hit. I’ve been releasing videos recently podcast vlogs where it’s like you put hours and hours into making this thing and Ten people see it 20 people see it whatever it is, whatever that number isn’t it that can be a little a little demoralizing you know, and There it takes it does take a certain amount of I know what a strength or Awareness to pick your socks up and be like keep going bro, like Don’t think long term two years three years down the track when it’s like you’ve really found your groove you’ve got the process down packed and you’re you’re impacting people to the level that you know, you’re capable of and you’re reaching people to the to the Level that, you know you’re capable of and that’s all it’s a patience game. Like I think one thing that this Social media realm has created and it may be older than that. I actually don’t know but that kind of Instant gratification it’s like you put a post out there Boom you get feedback immediately and if we don’t get that feedback immediately that you’ve you’ve got an expectation on like of course, the result is going to be like dissatisfaction so That’s something I think we all need to be mindful of of Yeah, just not having huge expectations on on Posts or on on projects or whatever it is. Just Coming back to enjoying the process and putting it out there and then moving on to the next one, you know, by all means like Look at the data that you’ve that you’ve got from a post and be like, okay What could I have done better like analyze it but don’t judge. It don’t judge it it on On yourself, don’t be like, oh my god. I’m I’m crap. What I’m doing sucks. It’s like no Just look at the data get get that feedback and Maybe you can learn something and apply it to the next the next video. So Yeah, staying positive motivated is definitely one thing I think thinking of things in terms of energy This is ah, I love this actually because this is it. This is the process Right now it’s like I’m I’m not the best speaker in the world. I’ll admit that and This is this is so human right now. Like I don’t have everything sorted in my mind I’m not the best speaker to a camera but I’m here doing it. And this is like what it’s what it’s actually like and I don’t know. I just think it’s important to to share this stuff because As I said at the beginning it’s it’s so easy to get to get caught up in the whole like oh my god They just look like everything they’re doing is so great. And and what I’m doing isn’t isn’t at that level and get into that comparative mindset, but I feel like sharing sharing videos like this actually allows people to To feel human to feel like oh, okay This guy is at this level and I and I see like he’s dealing with stuff too. We’re all dealing with stuff We’re all in our own process and I think it’s a hell a lot More similar than we think So yeah, just a little input there of reminding you why I’m doing this and why I think this is so great even as Missy and as kind of Weird as an erratic as it is imagine if a news article or news Bulletin was like this It wouldn’t work. It would have it suck But I think in conjunction with these news bulletins and these highly produced pieces of content it’s important to do these things as well, which is a little bit more like human and a little bit more real Anyway and over there What I was saying about energy is like When you think of when you think of yourself as like an energetic being? as opposed to a human called Karen with you know this beard and I’m 27 and all of the stories and the things that we associate ourselves to be when you just think about yourself as this energetic vibrating piece of energy and There’s different qualities of energy as I was saying before like right now, I’m feeling great and feeling very vibrant energetic alive But later, I won’t be later. I’ll be needing to rest and sleep and and re-energize When you think there’s tools and tactics to actually monitor and and be aware of your energy and Increase it doing certain practices, you know exercise running walking breathing stretching There are things to regulate your energy and boost it when you need to and bring it down when you need to certain breathing practices So I think it’s really important. I to be aware of that that there are tools to help you with that and To educate yourself on which one’s work for you for me. I do a lot of yoga I do little workouts to boost energy do a lot of breathing practices and That really helps me Stay energized stay fit keep the blood circulating That’s carrying oxygen to my brain all of this stuff, which is just helping with energy You know, I think we can get into this whole like I need it. Oh, man, I’m tired I need an energy drink and I love drinking coffee. Don’t get me wrong. I love coffee love care. They love it, but There are natural healthy ways Abundant ways that we can energize ourselves, you know through just moving our bodies Exercising breathing oxygen into our bodies that can really just well keep us energized and feeling great So just something to be mindful of I think if you’re a an active person I think you know you may have your own own things. But if you’re someone that’s I Don’t know not, you know, it doesn’t necessarily Think’s exercise is just for certain people or whatever. I totally hear that like it’s it’s tough to go running when you’ve got Sore knees and it’s tough to get into yoga or whatever on this huge stigma around it and you may not have you know Lululemon pants, and you may not be the most flexible person in the world It’s so easy to just be like are I you know, I don’t want to get into that. That’s too much so I get it and I think it’s just important to To just be mindful of the fact that we are these energetic beings and that there are tools to help regulate Energy that it was going to help you in your particular field. So to find things that work for you Maybe it’s just going for a walk you know a quick walk and just Focusing on breathing in and out and just focus on blood circulating around your body. That’s something we can all do and it’s really going to help you and just staying energized and it’s gonna help with your motivation of just ah, Feeling good feeling fresh and ready to dive into your mission. Whatever that is. So Next thing is like knowing knowing what the right moves to maker and Especially when things are Not there. That’s another one knowing the right moves. Like what is your TrueNorth? Like, what is my true north right now? I just just jumped off a Skype call with someone over in England a record label for independent musicians and it was a really cool conversation and and I’m curious about it and I’m like Is this the right move to? sign up with a company like this and and maybe it is but maybe it’s not and you know, you can oscillate between Things and the way that I’m going to approach this is I’m just gonna be like, okay something has come up into my sphere I’m curious about it. It sounds cool. But I’m not gonna rush into it and be like, okay, I need you This is it. This is my opportunity. I’m gonna tease maybe get on several phone calls with them there’s a particular project that they Want me to get involved in which is as interesting and I think it’s a good opportunity to kind of test the waters a little Bit and just really see over an extended period of time whether this is a company that I really want to invest a lot of time and energy into and put ultimately hand over a little bit of Control but just hand over a piece of the pie to them and it’s a big move it’s a big move and anyone You know If you’re a writer you may have to collaborate with a publisher if you’re a chef you may need to collaborate with a publisher to to get a book out there or you know a yoga teacher may be signing up with a yoga studio and being affiliated with certain brands like it’s all decisions that you need to make and It’s it’s tough. Sometimes to know is this is this the right move is this gonna impact me positively or negatively Sometimes you don’t know and sometimes you just gotta make the best educated guess like I was having a really interesting conversation with Talia yesterday we were talking about Like She asked me a silly question she was like if you okay if you had to choose between I was like something steakhouse to sponsor your podcast or A Colgate commercial or something like that. It was something really random. Like what would you choose and it opened up this question of like, you know associating your name and your brand and your your person with it with a brand that may not necessarily be aligned like Something steakhouse what I really want them sponsoring my podcast but what if they were offering me a hundred thousand dollars to do so, I mean, it just brings up this like moral dilemma of Like I could really do with a hundred thousand dollars. There’s so much I could do with that but do as me signing this giving the right impression to my audience or to my my soul and yeah, it’s a tricky one it brought up an Disclaimer absolutely love Xavier Rudd, and I know that he did sign a I Don’t know the mechanics of it But basically his songs one of his songs was used for a KFC Commercial and I know he received a lot of hard time for that because it’s Savior He’s a very conscious man spiritual man, and he’s using one of his songs in a KFC commercial and just disclaimer about that I don’t know a lot of the facts if you’re curious about this whole thing do your own research, but the Little that. I looked into it. It’s for me. It just brings up. You know, it’s an interesting question I know that Black Keys had a similar thing. I know this a bit more intimate intimately as they were offered five hundred thousand dollars to Use one of their songs for a mayonnaise commercial and they turned it down, which I found really interesting And they basically said I don’t want we do not want our song associated with the mayonnaise Simple as that and that’s a huge call five hundred thousand dollars and people say dude. It’s not about the money and As though it’s not about the money you’re not just gonna take any opportunity it’s like we need to be smart a business minded about like well, I could really use certain tools and What is the impact of signing signing a deal with the mayonnaise commercial? Is that negative? I? Don’t know. I actually don’t know if You if I was put in that situation would be a really interesting call It wouldn’t just be a flat note, even though I don’t eat mayonnaise. I don’t necessarily believe in that I think I don’t know if it’s negative for our bodies or not I don’t know but it’s not if it was a kombucha company I would I would totally think about it like yes love kombucha. Drink it every day healthy. Yes get me in there If it was like a hint proceed or something, yes. Oh I would dive in So, yeah, it’s interesting just an interesting topic and I guess If if I had a knife pointed at my stomach and I had to decide I would say no because ultimately, I don’t believe and I Don’t Mayonnaise doesn’t get me excited. This is such a funny conversation mayonnaise doesn’t get me excited. I don’t I would not put my name My smiling face on a mayonnaise commercial just I just doesn’t feel 100% juicy for me and even though I might take the financial head I Think long term again thinking that long term mind. I think it would pay off and I’m basing that purely on like Trust trust that there’s a there’s a higher purpose for me and my particular mission on this earth so Yeah, if I had to I know my true north is like health and wellness promoting goodness, like helping people inspiring people touching touching people on an emotional level that’s my true north and if Someone from the mayonnaise commercial said hey, man, like we’re totally aligned with you. Here’s why I Totally have that conversation with them but off the front just you know Judging the book by its cover. I’d probably say no, but I would be open to it You know, I’m a kind of open person. I’m open to hearing people and Hearing them out. I think that that’s probably the way to look at it as like Knowing you’re knowing your mission statement knowing your true north and being open to their expanding expanding to places that may be outside of your comfort zone or in their debt structure because You don’t want to limit yourself, you know what I mean? You don’t want to just be like no No, this is Who I am I don’t do that it’s like That’s cool, too But I think it’s it’s nice to be open nice to be Flexible to new opportunities that may take you somewhere that you never met You never would have dreamed of and you know, it’s good to take risks, too But I guess you’ve just gotta weigh everything up, you know talk to people that have been there before talk to people in your community and just weigh everything up and have that have that hard conversation with yourself like It’s that interesting exercise. When you you you ask yourself the question and the first answer that comes to your head that your gut speaking So I think good to pay attention to that to Karen do you want to do you want to sign with this mayonnaise commercial? Boom? No done simple as that Okay Staying in your lane born This is a big one. I think this is probably the biggest conversation with this whole podcast How are you by the way before I dive into that I hope you’re doing well sticking with me we are like 38 minutes into this. I’ve been I’ve been talking Interesting cool, I Hope you’re doing well. Listening. There may be get up stretch your legs. I’m going to do the same thing just have a little stretch If some water have a little break Infomercial time try and open this drink bottle with one hand. It’s not going to happen. Bear with me Yes Oh, yeah, that’s good, okay Staying in your lane. This is a big topic because in the social media world Staying in your lane is an art form Because there’s Every single minute someone is uploading something that they’re doing or something. They believe in or an idea. They’ve had and unless you’re like Totally secure and who you are and what you’re about and what you’re doing It is so easy to get caught up and what someone else is doing and think that you should be doing the same So easy. I’ve had so many conversations with musicians and my network good friends of mine that Constantly struggling with this I do too It’s stuff that they upload or at stuff that I upload like a good friend of mine started thinking he should do a vlog after I started doing one and it’s like maybe he should maybe you know, there’s a difference between Comparing and being inspired by someone. I was really inspired by Peter McKinnon to start my vlog I just thought he was he distance but just purely inspired me and I thought I want to do that and that’s awesome That’s what’s so good about this social network that we belong to that is freaking awesome that we can be inspired by people that live over the other side of the world and It’s something that can come along with that as comparing yourself to Pino McKinnon, which is something that I now deal with I mean he uploads two or three times a week these amazing videos It’s very easy to slip into like a man who’s video a bit of a mine and they are they are and that’s okay that Is okay I’m Working on my thing and just be like, okay, how can I how can I improve my thing without being judgmental on it? Just coming at it from that curiosity of like How could I how could I just make my video a little bit? You know 1% better this time around and those one that 1% that 1% just adds up Till you’ve just got a friggin gangster video But yeah knowing knowing your lane staying in it and knowing knowing the difference between Feeling inspired and getting comparative as this huge big personal work to to overcome because they’re so easy to get into compare land which is ah So toxic is that saying comparison is the thief of joy and it is so true If you ever feel that which I know you probably do It’s like oh, it’s just such a icky feeling so it’s it’s one of these things to be mindful of and then Kind of step out of it. I’m just trying to think is there any like tools to I Think it’s it’s it’s a it’s a conscious decision of Okay, let’s just like workshop this right now say I see perfect video of Peter McKinnon upload something Noticing first of all that I’m feeling comparative and kind of little bummed and then being like, hang on Hang on I’m doing that thing again take a breath and just see Peter McKinnon as a human being on his journey and the journey that he’s been on and And knowing that he was he was you know An amateur beginner at some point and he’s gotten to this point where he’s creating this amazing Artwork now, that is amazing seeing him as a is an individual human in his own lane and Stepping into that like celebration of him of being like man. He’s awesome. Damn and then seeing it totally separate from yourself totally and a whole other Lane and then Coming at it and then coming back to your lane of being like. Oh man. What? What did I learn from that? What could I apply in my own life as opposed to the classic which is like oh my god That video is so amazing. Like there’s no way I could ever do something like that He’s I’m worthless that that narrative that can so quickly happen So there’s a little practice and it is it’s a it’s a conscious decision to make when you ever feel that but I think it’s worth it’s worth doing that little process and I’m telling myself this as well as to To really stay in your own lane and celebrate people in their lane It’s a you know, it makes for awesome community and in supporting each other and you know I think actually a really good little practice is to write them and and you may have to step into your higher self for a moment and be like, hey men, just wanted to Sene you good vibes and keep up the amazing work like just a practical even though it might you might have to battle through that little message like it’s a good practice to get into if celebrating people in their Lane and then coming back to your own and not comparing the two lanes cuz that is Yeah a yucky place to be so something to carry bear in mind Yeah, I think there’s a two more little topics here is like Spinning spinning you do spit I spend a lot of time working alone Which I do love I love being by myself and working and just not being distracted by anything Just putting your head down and working and at the same time I do go through phases of feeling lonely Not this like pining like laying and beard sucking my thumb crying lonely, just lonely of like Man, I wish I had a homie here to just kind of talk some shit with and Bentall with and just kind of go through this thing together and Yeah, so something to be mindful of creating Being intentional with who you’ve work with You know those little workspace parties that you can get with a couple of friends you’re sitting around on your laptops around a table drinking coffee and just Doing your work and throwing the odd bit of banter out there that can be so much fun and so productive as well you kind of bounce off each others energy and That can be something really To create and that’s actually something in the next couple of months that I’m really wanting to manifest in my life I’ve spent five months best part of five nearly six months on a ranch in the middle of nowhere alone working and it’s been so amazing hyper productive and I’m and I’m ready to to start collaborating and working with different different people creative people like-minded people just just really I think there’s only a certain amount of time that you can work by yourself until you need that kind of I Don’t know that common Common thread with another person and bounce off each other. I’m really craving that so Yeah Something to be be mindful of and a couple of a couple a couple of final things before we wrap this thing up Being very intentional about intentional intentional is the right word about creating time for certain things and this is like This is gonna lead nicely into my little summary that I was I was thinking of it’s like In this self-employed life we you really are your own boss you are this number one kind of the only person in this endless game you need to create things and you need to be very intentional about what You do you use your time Doing you know creating time for certain things friends exercise hobbies self-care Relaxation time like you have to create there and you can do you can make that. However you want The Tim Ferriss 4-hour workweek book, which I haven’t read but I’ve heard about as you know Imagine they’re working for four hours and they’re actually working. I can’t even read on that It takes me four hours to do a pod Caban podcast So I think you’ve got to experiment with things you’ve got to experiment what works what works for you individually because we’re all so Fundamentally different some people might be able to work for hours and that’s great. But Me right now in my life. I can’t but I do need to stay balanced. I need to stay mentally healthy. And so carving out time in the day Creating time in the day to do these things spend time with my girlfriend spend time call my best friends You know go out running read a book these types of things You need to be very intentional with creating that time and that can be tough As I said gut circling back around to the beginning when there’s always something to do but I think Having that long game that long-term game of like Ron does not need to be built in a day. There is so much time I think there’s that kind of at saying that man life is super short and it’s it’s like it is But it isn’t there is so much time. There is so much time and we’re all living longer We may be a hundred and ten 120, which means that you know you You don’t have to have your shit sorted by the time you’re 20 might be 30. It might be 40 It might be 60. You may have three different careers in that time Like I was chatting to my friend the other day and we were talking about this. He’s like, dude I’m gonna live to be 120 and that means that I’ve got three I’ve got three 20-year careers that I could live. I don’t know if he’s gonna be a hundred and twenty But I go and be surprised and three 20-year careers. That means that I’m only a quarter Just over a quarter of the way through my first career. That’s insane looking at it like that That is insane. Imagine the amount of growth and The interesting random things that I’m gonna if I’m any quarter of the way through my first career It’s insane, maybe this is actually that the second Quarter of my first career getting into podcasting and vlogging. This is the next little chapter Kind of a cool way to look at it anyway So, yeah That’s kind of it guys. I want to summarize all of this by just saying like if you’re one of these people that is working a job for someone else and You have a calling to do something else There’s just that like waning voice every night when you go to sleep or throughout the day just saying, oh man I really want to start that clothing company or I really want to I really want to you know start my own butter Butter company or I really want to be a musician or whatever it is but I don’t know how if you’re on the fence or if you’re a If you’re on the you know on one side of the fence and you don’t even know how to get to be on the fence terrible analogy if you wanted these people I Just want us. Yeah speak directly to you of like just saying this life that you’re thinking about getting into is Very very random and very scary and so exciting and incredibly satisfying And it is such an amazing opportunity for just growth and learning learning about yourself and learning about the world and Learning about business and courage in all of these amazing things That I Think in of itself as a reason to start that butter company Just to learn about yourself and learn about the world and how things work like its Business and self-employment is such a great opportunity for growth and I mean I for those who are listening and don’t know I was actually studying to be a Primary school teacher an elementary school teacher when I was 18 and I unenrolled from there to pursue music and it was a messy process Getting into that there’s actually a whole nother podcast I did my last self riffing process was a so my last self riffing podcast was about that process and it took all I took a long time to three years to really start kicking into gear and Even now six seven years into it like it’s still ever-changing and I still have feelings of doubt. I still have feelings of fear but it’s so Interesting like it’s such an interesting like I don’t know. I’m in Ohio at the moment. I’m moving Somewhere in the next few weeks. I don’t know where I Do not know. We actually did a vlog part one of a blog post, which I’m yet to release I did a part one of like Saying I’m about to leave and I don’t know where to and I want to put that whole Trust in the universe idea in action. So I’m gonna do a part two podcast a vlog About like what happened what actually ended up happening part one is I don’t know what’s gonna happen part to us This is what happened and I put my put my trust in the universe that there’s a plan there’s some guidance there There’s some help from an unknown source that is like helping me out and it’s a big part of this as well as like I think there’s a lot of fear before you step into a new arena of like I don’t know how it’s gonna play out and of course, you don’t like there’s always a Huge amount of unknown when you step into these things people will ask. Well how you earn money. It’s like I have no idea I have no idea how I’m going to earn money But I’m gonna trust that it’s gonna work out And it’s a huge leap just a huge leap to take I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve got like a very supportive family That I’ve leaned on from time to time that have taken me in back home And I’ve stayed with them and I’ve stayed little slipped and so many different bids that sounds dodgy. But I’ve like taken People have taken me into their homes to sleep when I’m on tour or like right now I’m staying here with my girlfriend’s family and and I’m staying in a ranch at the moment which which I Guide Jonathan like reached out to me online and said like come stay I believe in you come stay at my house like that is heaven to me so many times and there’s no way I could have predicted that ever The I really believe that the universe has really conspired to quote The Alchemist Conspiring to help you on your mission your ultimate kind of purpose on in the world and you might not know what that is But you may just have that faint voice that is like Give it a go. Whatever it is. Just give it a go and just Trust that there is a there’s an it underneath you that when you when you leap off there will be an it it’s constantly a net and that net comes in the form of people believing you and helping you and Giving you resources giving you tools to help you on your mission It’s just one of these weird things that has most certainly happened for me And the people that I that I know and love in my community that are doing similar things happens for them, too It’s it’s so magic and it really it makes you believe in that the magic of life that there is this there is this force this mysterious wonderful force that is like helping you out and Whether you believe it or not. It’s a cool idea to apply when you take that leap because It helps it certainly helps us helped me and Yeah, so that is pretty much it you guys I think I’ve covered everything I wanted to Thanks for sticking with me. This has been Rambling from time to time. But again, I just wanted to to say the point of this is just to share the process mean it’s like it’s so easy to get caught up and and The the end product of like our man, that is so good I wish I could do that when you watch something like this and it’s like you see what I’m putting out and Some of you may like it some of you may not and that’s fine But the people that do like it they’re like, oh man Kieran he’s amazing He does this epic artwork and and music and songs and stuff I wish I could be like that and I don’t mean that in a big-headed way but there will be people out there that feel like that I get messages from people saying stuff like that and it’s amazing and this is what this is what it’s like this is this is what goes into making that bad artwork and that those songs and those pieces of content this is what it can can be like and I think it’s important to share that so people don’t get any false ideas about who you are and how you do things and She knows that’s it you guys I hope I hope this has inspired someone to Throw your head over the wall or or maybe just give you a little bit like a Kind of metaphorical hug of like man, you’re all good. You’re doing a good job. Keep going like you’ve got this I Hope that that’s what it that was the intention for this. I hope it’s given you that If it has please Like this comp like this post like this podcast got their Comment your thoughts below. I would love to just hear what you think. Love to hear what you have got from this and Any tips and advice for me would be great. Hey stop rambling that might be something or Whatever you think whatever you feel, let’s get a bit of a conversation of going about this. Let’s get a conversation of going about this that’d be great and Share this with someone that you think would really need to see it if you got a friend that’s like on the fence Really wants to make that butter company Share them share this with them and just it may inspire them to just go out and do this do that thing So thank you so much for tuning in you guys. I love you all so much. Thank you all for the support Thank you for listening to this. Ah I’ll see you on the next podcast. I’ve got some really exciting ones coming up.
