Well welcome to another episode of

fabulous wellness podcast this time we’re going to we have a very special
guest you’ve met him before professor Mark Cohen has already spoken to us in
depth but mind you not enough we will have him back on talking more on his
fabulous water filtration systems but today I’ve invited professor Mark to
come back and talk to us about something that I absolutely love and I know that
you are as well and that is health retreats professor Mark it’s fabulous to
have you back with us at boomer babes like wellness thanks for inviting me
Janie now professor mark health retreats yeah
I love them and but I need to get to more you are the king of of health
retreat so can just start off with on our Boomer babes like wellness podcast
can you tell us what is the health retreat well people have different
definitions but I mean they call this you know wellness tourism and its
primary wellness tourism when you go to it go to a destination to transform your
health so often it’s as much about the intention of the people that come there
is the property itself because there’s many health resorts that you can have a
telephone trade experience the positive trades are being around that for
millennia I mean Hippocrates wrote about you know places and water you know as
going away and environment healing you and the idea of the health retreated
will you go away from your normal routine so you’re out of your home
you’re out of your normal routine you’re out of your normal what you know flow of
looking after yourself and you go somewhere to transform your health now
there’s a many different places around the world that
oldest one I know of is um Rancho La Puerta in in Mexico and it’s still going
um Debra sake I’ve started that seven more than 75 years ago she’s still
around she’s 95 now I’m still and she said they’re with their husband their
Nessa magnificent health retreat which visited a great organic food and Gardens
and all these different activities and educate often ISM the elements are it’s
an immersive lifestyle experience so you’re sleeping a team learning
activities are all encompassed often there’s an educational component so
you’re learning things as well as doing things you’re experiencing new foods
often they’ll teach you ways to cook or prepare beverages often there’s physical
therapy’s asserting a massage yoga Pilates push walking you know different
activities physical activities as well as often creative activities and art
therapy there’s a whole range of all the different therapies and interactions can
be can be available sometimes they’re quite focused I think in the 1970s a lot
of them were set farms but people went to lose weight I remember those
consumers are becoming more sophisticated wellness retreats are
becoming more focused 30 minutes ago a tresor leau retreats with a specific
theme or targeting a specific demographic but generally that’s the
same principles of you remove yourself human normally environment you have an
immersive you often you share your data so they want to know about you and what
your problems are and what your issues are so you share yourself and that and
then the retreat people will share their expertise you generally have an
experience and then you bring that you know you in that experience you
transform yourself so you’re at a new place and then you bring your
transformed self back to your routine and you live a happier healthier life so
that’s the general process and are not being researching the health of treats
and pretty much 30 years because I love healthful trades myself and so the
element in the research I’ve done is obviously done research on health or
traits themselves than twenty more than twenty years ago now I took a wolf
mid-1994 about four or five years I took groups of medical students at Monash
University awaits or healthy treat for a week and had a deep dive into healthy
lifestyle and then I’m recently more recently we’ve studied a guest at the
Gwynn Ghana health retreat in Queensland and Southern Queensland where we
measured people’s health and their mood and their thinking ability and their
waist blood pressure and all these different pesticide levels before one
week after and six weeks after this was a scientific study we’ve published that
I think it’s an open-access article do wellness joists get well people can
google that and get the whole article and we found that after a week at a
healthy treat people us they’re lighter happier less depressed thinking thinking
clearer fewer symptoms and generally those changes last for six weeks so
there is a lasting change from your summer series experience so in research
like that that you did as well that leads me into my next question then so
who who who should be considering going on a health retreat and is it isn’t age
specific or is it for everybody really well often health retreat will pick the
demographic they want to work with right a lot of health retreats actually
exclude children because you know adults want to just focus on their thing they
don’t have to care for children don’t now becoming more boutique retreats and
include children as well so it really it’s up to the retreat to define their
demographic I think there are retreats for everybody oh and people can actually
almost do-it-yourself create your own retreat experience when you go away on a
holiday and you can sort of create those elements yourself but essentially it is
good to have a guide and know to be held in a container to have staff that can
look after you so you can just go into your own process and be supported and
often things come up so often in health retreats and the Australian one to have
a particular flavor to them they’re a bit more bootcamp Ian that they might
exclude alcohol and caffeine so a lot of people come
they’re trying to get off you know whether it’s other prescription drugs or
illicit drugs or alcohol or caffeine etc or tobacco but you know people go
through withdrawals and they can often be no creation nothing there our support staff to help
you through our withdrawal process because it’s a detoxification process
that often goes with health retreat experiences yes
other needs that the healthy people already and I just want dive deep into
the yoga practice or into their no becoming even more healthier than they
are so it really depends on where you’re asking your own health and what you want
to achieve are the health retreats allow you to continue drinking and maybe a
little bit of alcohol or a little bit of caffeine but they try and limit it so
they really the philosophy of the retreat that you’re going to and the
people who are running is and also what you want to achieve out of it but I
think health or treat can Bennett benefit everybody in Europe for many
years a lot of that government speak in Eastern Europe used to pay for people to
go and get the Cure and go away for a week or two and have a retreat
experience and come back and be more enlivened and more productive and and
happier and healthier just been that experience of getting away well well yes
because and that makes total sense because in today’s society where
everything is so fast-paced and everything is like it’s it’s it’s almost
like you have to have more to do more to be more unlike there’s always all so
many pressures outside of ourselves sort of scheduling in a week for yourself and
then finding a health retreat that sort of fits as you say fits into what
potentially you’re looking for or to get you re-energized and and and back in and
sort of re leveled in your own thought process is a good thing to schedule in I
mean if you should drill everything else in in you know and even just to reflect
because often that week where you’re taking time out you can reflect on
what’s important to you and what direction your life is taking and what
decisions you want to make and and you know face any health challenges but also
other decisions in your life and just having time out
to reflect on your own life it’s a really healthy thing I think it really
is a valuable process for people to address and then on the particular
retreat you’re going up going for often they had like a buffet of experiences
that you can then choose for you know in a particular time period you may can
choose from three or four different activities or getting massages or
different treatments but often people don’t even know what they want and it’s
nice in the retreat experience to go a little bit beyond your comfort zone to
try new things that might be the first time you try to do a tai chi class or a
physical type of therapy or you know I’ve been running retreats where we do
no extreme bathing where we go from sauna sauna and really guided sauna
experience but then we go into an ice-water and go backwards and forwards
and doing that so it’s it’s a little bit out of the comfort zone but but you’ve
got guides to help you and it’s in a controlled environment so you’re happy
to extend yourself a little bit and expand your you know idea of who you are exactly it’s interesting because last
year as you know we well I I’ve been doing yoga I’ve been doing yoga as a
practice for over 25 years and towards the beginner we’ll sort of middle of
last year I I really felt like I needed to get away and don’t want to health
retreat and I didn’t know where to go what to do and then I thought well you
know to really immerse myself why don’t I go and get my certification as a yoga
teacher so I went to Bali and for five weeks and totally immersed myself in a
structured yoga certification instructors course but what I did which
is what you just touched on then what I did for that entire period I made the
conscious decision to have private accommodation not the shared so and and
also I didn’t you know all the girls went out for coffee in the middle of the
day and things that you know in a border you do and all that sort of thing and
sometimes you know the girls would have wine at night there I chose not to do
any of that and I almost made myself a hermit outside of
what we were all doing together because I wanted to consciously have this five
weeks as a full immersive health retreat and I have to say they’re coming out at
the end of that not only was I you know a certified yoga instructor which I was
very proud of and especially at my age however I felt looked and acted the
healthiest I have in my life and I just went I’ve got a schedule in these
retreat yeah I’ve got a schedule there’s not five weeks I point because I mean we
could take these medical students away for a week and which part was an
elective in the Monash Medical Program in the nineties oh and what we got from
that was that at the end of the week they would still the healthiest that
ever felt but what what we and they know reflected back to us is that that they
didn’t know what healthy was because if you’re always having a bad diets and
your breathing polluted air and you know in the city with all the stress you yes
you think those aches and pains and that rash and their asthma and all the
different no niggly health issues you think that’s who you are
Oh realize that you know that’s not necessary and that you know you can
actually be so much healthier and once you’ve given the people were given
someone experience of being extremely healthy
that’s itself is transformative because then they know it’s possible for them
and I think that’s a really important point that no you asked even after one
week research going Ghana no people suddenly realized wow I can sleep really
well you know I don’t need coffee to prop me up I don’t need alcohol to relax
me and I know quite a few people who was I mean I know myself I became vegetarian
after a fully vegetarian organic vegetarian after spending a week in 1991
it um on toss healthy treat big organic farm or it’s a health and treat and I
claimed that feeling so good I didn’t want to didn’t want to change I was a
vegetarian I know I know friends of mine who’ve
been to a health of treating suffered terribly for three days with caffeine
withdrawal then they decided they’d never wanted to repeat that so they just
stopped caffeine cuz I know that the hold the caffeine
Wow such a horrible withdrawal process headaches and irritability that they say
I’d never want to go through that withdrawal against I’m not going to
start caffeine again it’s really an opportunity to change your habits but
also to realize how healthy you can be and that how unhealthy some of the
regular lifestyle practices you picked up can be and you can you can change
them how exciting is that to feel that if you if you go and have this
experience that for the first time maybe even in your entire life you actually
experience exciting energized health that is just amazing so that leads me
into this with you professor mark is that I’ve heard on the grapevine that
you are hosting and you have created a fabulous health retreat that is coming
up in November of this year so we’re in the year 2019 so if you’re listening to
this podcast now and it’s 2020 I’m sorry you’ve missed it yes however you know
that you can always check in with boomer babe’s life.com forward slash wellness
to find out upcoming retreats that we will promote but for the for now let’s
talk about this one coming up in November what can you tell us about this
so I’ve been running I’ve been running retreats
well since the 1990s I ran for medical students and then I’ve traveled
retrieves all over the world looking at the elements I like and don’t like and
what I could do better and so this year I’m running a retreat as you have I ran
three retreats um earlier this year in New Zealand and I’m a shareholder of a
hot spring resort in New Zealand hot springs we’ll be learning more retreats
in New Zealand next year like all these extreme wellness retreats but the one
coming up in November is in Bali it’s at a resort called commune that she owned
by the same owner who owns green Ghana where we did that which is the biggest
health of treat mister alien which were we did our research it’s on Kurama
speech in Bali so it’s a beautiful you know a luxury a resource and we’re
taking over you know part of that resource
having sort of a private areas and sessions and in a five-day it’s a
five-day retreat I’m bringing on some very special guests and co-presenters
we’re going to be there with me but over these five days we’re going to go
through some of the concepts of how you can transform your life we’re going to
focus on the self they’re gonna focus on your environment and your home
environment and how you can transform your home and in turn your home into a
health retreat and it will say and how you can actually bring that to your
whole community so and we do a whole lot of different activities from brewing
kombucha and physical activities but I’m I’ve got a particular process where it
allows you to talk to yourselves and it’s a and these processes really stop
cellular aging they’re really great for anti-aging but great for pain for
procrastination for psychological problems anxiety depression and it
involves going to your your limits with oxygen carbon dioxide water temperature
and glucose so these are the five elements that all your cells relate to
so we deal with water where we go hydration we have a really high quality
sort of border week soldier and flash we talked about students last time so we
get our bladder not operating really well with a bladder al with your body in
your brain so with water we deal with our bladder we learn how to know reduce
the toxicity coming in by having clean water and herbal teas and increase the
toxicity going out for our bladder by /yes our bodies we talk about our bowel
and glucose and feasting and fasting and how you can do that really gently and
how you do it anyway everyone fasts overnight you do I know I do fast
overnight and then you have your breakfast at time of fasting and then
give your digestive system a real rest and how then the feast is in the first
bite so we and then when you’re hungry everything tastes amazing and you can
get in touch with your hunger and really appreciate your food and then that
changes your whole microbial and it changes the by changing the
bacteria in your gas that can change your food cravings and your whole
relationship to to food so we’ve talked about feasting and fasting with your
bowels and then with your breath we do particular breeding practices that allow
you to increase oxygen and reduce oxygen and when you’re hypoxic your cells sort
of freak out and I pull it like a declutter to yourselves and if you
mention your cells normally your shelter they’ve got everything they need they’ve
got heaps of glucose it’s heaps of oxygen and they don’t have to do much
and it’s and I make the analogy it’s like you being on the couch with uber
each and home delivery food and Netflix with the whole series of things you want
to watch and people keep on coming around visit you and bringing food and
you’re totally comfortable but there’s no incentive to go and clean out your
fridge or your fruit bowl so after a week or two of that know the stuff in
the back of your fridge goes fast and smooth by dating your fruit bog starts
to get a bit moldy and insecty and the veggie crisper
so your cells do the same thing now some of the proteins go passing use by a date
and they’re not properly folded and it’s free oxygen radicals lying around which
is like a festering food but if people stop bringing food into your house
suddenly now you get really hungry you go to the kitchen and the stuff you can
it you throw away and the stuff you can eat you leave well your cells do the
same thing when they’re hypoxic if you restrict oxygen to your cells just for a
very short time they freak out and they start to reshuffle things and the old
proteins that a miss folder they they recycle them
it’s called Auto Fei Jie or taka G and then the cells have a precancerous an
aging they don’t survive and they get recycled that’s called apoptosis or
programmed cell death and it’s like a deep slash a process for yourselves and
it’s really powerful it’s like when you declutter your house
suddenly things become really easy to find and you want to do something is a
job I know where all my tools I can just do it you souls become do the same thing
so show me you’ve got more energy in the food that you do eat you can get more
nutrients and energy out of Cydonia instance much but you’ve actually more
energy so we do that with breathing and oxygen and high oxygen low oxygen and
also high carbon dark and low carbon dioxide and that pays
with a pH in their body and then we do is temperature as well so we have hot
tubs and saunas steam rooms and then we do ice pay the cold water bathing we go
from hot to cold no people don’t like the cold often when you’ve got the hot
to go back into it’s actually really quite invigorating and yet whole body
tingles and and and somewhere between hot and cold is perfect and the more you
can define your limits the more you can really you know wallow in that perfect
place so we do it’s hot and cold and then we also deal with with activity
with with generator come down so but it’s done with your brain so we do
things to put you in flow things like dance the extreme we’re almost between
Bali we’re all gonna be doing fire twirling you learn how to move with the
stick and then you control fire and that puts you in a slow stage and then we do
things where you’re actively doing nothing so it’s like a an openness after
the breathing exercises and we do some primers that really throw your body down
so you’re actively doing nothing so your body’s in just the most total peaceful
blissful stays actives being in that state so every day we’ll do these
activities of hot and cold and the breathing and activities and the
feasting and we really get to understand we talked about how your mind and your
Mike’s mitochondria start talking to each other get on the same page and that
makes your whole metabolism much more efficient and also it’s incredibly
uplifting for your mood so she Prime’s your body for happiness
so you’ll find afterwards you know you’re at less anxiety and less no
depress thinking and you actually become quite elated so it’s really quite
invigorating to do that the retreats that I that I run I have
some other common elements where I think it’s really important to take great
quality photos for people so they’ve got a memory of the retreat but also that
they can see themselves as heroes they can see themselves and someone better
than they thought they were so we know when we go into a lot
Valley retreat you know we’ve got special photographers who will be taking
photos the hero shots for people while they do I said the fire fire and doing
the different things so people have this they can actually not just remember the
feeling that photo can then know really well six months later they can look at
that photo and remember that feeling and that actually helps me in live and and
RIA wake the state of being that they had at the retreat so I think it’s
really important to have that sort of that memory to keep the follow-up going
that’s so exciting because you’re absolutely right when you when when you
can go away and do something as spectacular as you’ve just outlined for
us right now and then as everyone knows like you’re go and quite often the
people can go and do these things and they can get really rebalance realigned
and and back into what even a better place than they were before and they’re
so excited and motivate and then you know a couple of months later things
start to change up but if you’ve got a visual memory trigger like you’ve just
outlined I think that’s gold mark that is that is that is really powerful it’s
great great for the marketing of the retreat because then people want to
share those on social media although one of the people would give it private they
can share them or not it’s up to them yeah but it is really powerful to have
that memory and when they see themselves so enlivened that that helps help give
them motivation to stay that way when they go home well absolutely and I’m
really excited now this and I know that everyone who’s listening to this podcast
right now you you’ve got a better understanding about health treats why
you would benefit from going to a health retreat what to expect at a health
retreat but most importantly we you have an opportunity to experience one of
these fabulous health retreats that Professor mark is actually running here
in November in Bali so wherever you are in the world right now how you can find
out about it is very easy and we will put the links below in this podcast but
right now I can let you know if you go to WWE no origin com slash boomer baby’s
life and go to the section on wellness you will see about all the details on
the health retreat professor Mike is running here in
November 2009 teen you can get all the details you can book it and you can lock
yourself in because this sounds absolutely amazing it’s five days you
said didn’t do my favorite tree yes so really because especially because it is
in one of the most beautiful parts of the world in Bali in the Indonesia then
you can also like you can spend more time and in and explore that beautiful
island as well so it’s it’s quite the treat and it sounds amazing
yeah and it’s I mean it is gonna be a treat I mean because there people will
be nurtured with you know beautiful organic food and purple teams and
computers and massage and the great environment so it’s a major speech that
chemists where we’re having the commune with we were running the retreat wall so
it’s a federalist environment but then we bought we’ve got these specialist
presenters I want to be joined by Cecilia McAuley who’s a permaculture
designer that also does home decluttering and she’s as Japanese lean
production methods and permaculture and and sort of like Marie Kondo
decluttering said to give you skills to turn your home into a Helms a treat so
you can actually got practical things you can do when you go back home to make
and the way she describes it is it makes what you should do what you want to do
you know what we should do we all know we should English toast and and do more
exercise but you know convenience so if but if you can design your physical
environment and you can make it so the things you should do other things that
are easy to do and that you want to do and that’s sort of what happened to the
health retreat because that the health of treat you know you have to wait that
the things that you should enter or all the things that are there and all the
healthy foods and things so that you make it easy to do that yeah want to go
and make a coffee or a cigarette you have to go out somewhere and you know
it’s hard to do that it’s easy to do the good things we want to make our whole
lives like this yeah absolutely professor mark I’m excited and thank you
