So Vanessa some of these portraits are
of Isobel that one and that one and that’s of me as a little girl I’ve just
sort of been doing a little bit of digging How have you found painting Isobel as compared to your self-portraits? I care more about them –
they’re more sensitive – so I’m much harder on my expectations of how she
comes across as well. But at the moment I’m trying to do these more elemental
portraits to get that sort of softness and that sometimes that despondent gaze
they get you know you’re not going to see them in the happy snaps where they’re
always smiling and I’m not going for that
that’s for photos because they’re already a
developed with person and they have a personality and
I’m trying to capture what that’s like A lot of the things in this living room I see in your
interiors – like the rug and the chandelier I can see where you get your
inspiration from yeah I just paint my house or wherever
I’ve been what I’ve seen that day so I don’t use a lot of imagination So one that you just
put down, is that one of the earlier ones? Yes that’s one of the earlier ones. Which painting was it that you were
saying that you first started moving into – brought more colour
in? It’s this one and I think you call them a bridge piece and I think
this is the first one – it was a breakaway from the other and this is
what I’m working on now When I first painted that particular
work – I think I did four paintings that day and that was the last
one – and I I was tired losing a little bit of steam and I thought – What is that?
And then I went upstairs into the house and had a night of no sleep and then I
came back down the next day and I thought there’s something about that that’s really
interesting – sure, it doesn’t look exactly like me but do any of them? And there was
just something about that work I thought was interesting and I thought I’ll come
back to that and that’s what I’m working on now
