AppTV: Stitcher for Podcasts

– Welcome back to AppTV. I’m Tasia Custode. Today’s app wants to welcome
you to the spoken word. That’s right, we’re featuring one of the hottest podcast apps available. Stick around. Join me, Tasia Custode. – And me, Gary Steeves. – For another episode of AppTV. (upbeat music) Stitcher is one of the most popular apps for curating your favorite
podcasts, news and radio shows. The app, Stitcher for
Podcasts, is available for iOS and Android devices,
as well as web applications and Amazon Echo. You can even listen to
Stitcher in your car with Apple’s CarPlay and
Google’s AndroidAuto. Let’s get to some of
the features of the app. I’m using my iPhone for this one with the voiceover enabled. While Stitcher does support
some voiceover capability, sometimes it can be a little glitchy. With that said, this app
is still worth checking out because once you’ve got playlists set up, you can enable voiceover to
help you navigate through them and the rest is all listening. The first thing you’ll need
to do is to create an account and specify your interests. You can do so by logging in
with Facebook or via email. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll
be taken to a topics list. This topics list has
nine squares in a grid with topics written in the squares. Stitcher organizes topics into things like News & Current Events, Comedy, True Crime, Science & Technology, and more. Just tap on whichever topics you’d like, and then select Done in the
bottom middle of the app. Now that you’ve selected your interests, you’ll be on the main
screen of the Stitcher app, or what they call your front page, and it’ll automatically play
a Getting Started message for you. – [App] Welcome to Stitcher, where you can listen to
your favorite radio shows and podcasts on demand. Listen to what you want, when your want, on your commute, around
the house, or on the go. Stitcher’s front page
automatically keeps you up-to-date with new episodes
from your favorites, the latest headlines, and recommendations based on your listening. Here’s a few selections
based on your selections. Enjoy. – To browse specific shows, select the main button in
the top left of the screen or swipe left to right. This brings in a black sidebar. The fourth option down is Browse Shows, and this is what you’ll
select to, you guessed it, browse specific shows. Here, you’ll have a grid
format of even more topics to help narrow down your search. You can scroll up through
the topics and tap to select. I’ll select Popular & Trending. Here you’ll have even more options. These options will vary
depending on what category you’ve picked. So you’ll be able to narrow
down your search even further. If you know the name of the podcast or radio show you want to add, it’s much quicker to
manually search for that. To do so, select the Search icon in the top right of the screen. Here, in a search bar at
the top of the screen, type in the name of
the podcast you’d like. Now, underneath the search bar, you’ll have a list of all matching names. Just tap the blue circle
with the plus symbol in it to the right of the show name to add it. Tap the Menu button in
the top left of the screen to pull up the Menu sidebar. Now select Downloads,
the fourth option down, to access your downloaded content. I think Stitcher is a really great app for curating your favorite podcasts, but there is a big
opportunity missed here. Searching for and adding
podcasts to your playlist may be difficult for blind
or partially-sighted users. While voiceover does work, it’s glitchy whenever there
are grid menus on the screen. However, it’s still worth checking out if you have a little help
setting up your favorite content. For more AppTV tips and
