Apple Podcasts App

Apple Podcasts App

NARRATOR: How to Download
a podcast with AMI-audio. MIKE FEIR: Hi. I’m Mike Feir, and
AMI has asked me here to do some
demonstrations of podcast apps on iOS to help users get the
most out of their devices and the AMI podcasts
that are on offer. So basically, we’re going to
start with the Apple podcast app. This is an app from
Apple, and it is free. It should be on your
iOS device once you’ve finished the setup process. And you shouldn’t need to go
to the app store to find it. It should just be on one
of your home screens. So Apple has done a lot
to revamp their app, and it’s got a lot of artificial
intelligence in there now. So as it learns
what you like, it will recommend things to you. What we do first is we’re
going to open the app. And I have– let
me go to Podcasts. I’ll double tap on that. You can also do a split tab,
where you find something with one finger,
flicking left and right, and you hold down
with one finger, and you tap with another. And that can also be
like a double tap. It’s called a split tap. And that might be
useful if you have ability issues or
anything like that with dexterity of the hand. So we are now in the
Apple Podcasts app. And it comes up in
the Listen Now tab. There are four tabs
across the bottom. There’s Listen Now, which is
the bottom left, which we’re in. It contains all recent episodes. The next one over is Library. So it does all the shows
that you subscribe to. And you can look by
show and episode, and dig deep, and go back
far, so that might be useful if you miss something like “Live
From Studio 5” a couple of days ago, and you want to go back. So we’ve got into the app. We’re going to go
search for a podcast. So the search in this
is the bottom right tab. I’m going to flick over. Browse and then Search, so
double tap on the Search tab. Now we’re in the Search tab. And we’re going to go to
the Search field, which is at the top of the screen. You can touch at the top
left and then flick right, and you get to it. And search all podcasts. So that’s everything that is
known by Apple’s directory. You double tap on
the search field to get into the edit field. SIRI: Search field is editing. All podcasts.Character mode. Insertion point. At start. So we’re in– it
says is editing, so you know it’s
ready to accept input. You can type, or you can
dictate your searches if you’re connected
up online with data or whatever you can do, Siri. That’s what I’m going to do. So I’m going to– the
Dictate button is just to the left of the space. So if you find this space,
like I just did there– I’m going to flick left once. SIRI: Double tap
to start dictation. Two finger double
tap when finished. MIKE FEIR: So double
tap to start dictation, double tap when finished. So I will do that. “Live from Studio 5.” SIRI: Inserting
“Live From Studio 5.” MIKE FEIR: So it just says
inserted “Live From Studio 5,” so we know that
that sounded right. We’re going to do a search. Now, to execute the search,
you find the Search button. It’s in the bottom right. SIRI: Search. MIKE FEIR: And I just touched
it, and it said search. So I’m going to
double tap on that. SIRI: Search. MIKE FEIR: There’s a little
background noise that it makes, and that will tell you
that it’s doing something, that it’s accepted your command. And now we have the
results of the search. I’m going to touch on the top
left, and we’ve got Shows here. So I’m going to flick right. SIRI: See All button. “Live From Studio
5” on AMI-audio. Accessible Media
Incorporated button. MIKE FEIR: So that’s what we
want, “Live From Studio 5” on AMI-audio. And I’m going to
double tap on that. That gets me into
the shows entry. So now that I’m in the entry– I just double tapped
on that, and everything on the screen at this point
is related to this one show, “Live From Studio 5.” So we flicked to the right. Artwork, name of the show. SIRI: Accessible Media
Incorporated button. MIKE FEIR: Accessible Media
Incorporated, who produces. And then we hit Subscribe. So that’s how you
subscribe to a podcast. You double tap on that. SIRI: Subscribe. MIKE FEIR: And it will be
a bit of a pause there, and then it will blip, and now
it’s gone back to the entry. And it shows that
you have subscribed. If you flick over– SIRI: Artwork, Live From Studio
5, Accessible Media, subscribe. MIKE FEIR: And it sort
of said subscribed. It’s hard to hear
the D at the end. But you are subscribed now. So that’s how we get to where
you now– any new episodes would come, you’d be alerted. So if we now want
to play episodes, we can go into the Listen
Now tab or the Library tab, depending on how far back. So I’m going to go
to the Listen Now. SIRI: Selected Listen Now. Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday. Craig Oliver. Buying the Trans-Mountain Pipeline. The federal government has
announced that it will be buying the Trans-Mountain
Pipeline from– MIKE FEIR: So this is in
the Listen Now segment, and we have a segment here. But I don’t know
what show that is. So if we go to the library– SIRI: Heading. Recently updated. Heading.
Episodes. The Current from CBC radio. Blind Abilities Podcast. MIKE FEIR: I’m flicking
through episodes– “Kelly and Company”,
“Live from Studio 5.” So Wednesday is the last entry. I’m going to double tap there. And we’re in the entry
for “Live from Studio 5.” And I can go to the
right and then hit Play. And that’s the first thing
that appears here. So if I double tap on that– SIRI: Playing Craig Oliver,
Buying the Trans-Mountain Pipeline. Playing Craig Oliver, Buying
the Trans-Mountain Pipeline. 13 minutes left. Button. MIKE ROSS: I’m Mike Ross. Here’s a segment from our show. MIKE FEIR: And there we are. It has– MIKE ROSS: It airs weekdays
from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Eastern on AMI– MIKE FEIR: So that is
basically a podcast playing. Now, you can go into
the Mini Player. To do that, you go to the bottom
and move a little to the left, and you come to the Mini Player. And if you flick left
four times or so, and find the album artwork,
and double tap on that, you can expand the player. And that way, you have access
to all these controls here. If you have track position,
you can go up and down. That’s a slider. You have play, 15-second rewind,
fast forward, pause, unpause. All that stuff is right there. Very easy to just flick left and
right to the option you want. If you want to pause in a
hurry, you can double tap. You tap the two fingers
at once, tap, tap, and it will pause the playback
or start playback again. So that’s another
method of doing that. So that is basic how
to get to the point where you can play a podcast. The settings for the
Apple Podcasts app are not in the app itself. They’re in Settings. So you would go to the
Settings, and you would look to the Podcast Settings. You’d find the section
in your podcast– in the Settings app, sorry. It will say Podcasts. Double tap on that. And in there, you
can then choose whether you want it to stream
or download, things like that. So there’s all kinds
of options there. It’s good to be
familiar with them. And that will make
your streaming versus download
experience a lot better. So that is Apple Podcasts. I hope everyone enjoys that. NARRATOR: Subscribe to
“Live From Studio 5” on Apple Podcasts or any
major podcasting platform.
